Diesel Mechanic - Garrett, IN

JOB SUMMARY: Perform all tractor and trailer repair estimation diagnosis and correction following standard operating procedures (SOP's). Completes routine rebuilds and replacements, makes best value and safety decisions to continue to operate, repair or replace, and performs technical repairs and/or replacement. Uses American Trucking Association (ATA) system and other published and internet-based manuals and check sheets.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Reads paper and electronic instructions to understand, document and close work orders to be completed.2.Diagnoses and repairs problems in the areas of engine, component parts and various other vehicle items (i.e. Qual Comm, tachometer, speedometer, power steering, power divider, U-joint, transmission, rear end, A/C, starter, alternator.)3.Makes decisions on whether a component can continue to operate or should be repaired/replaced, based on best overall value and safety impact.4.Individually or in conjunction with another Mechanic, performs tractor PMs including responsibility for resolving any equipment performance problems identified by the driver.5.Utilizes paper (ie. permits) and computer system (M5) to accurately create, track and complete work order repairs including the tracking of time (labor hours), parts used and work completed.6.May perform accident repairs on tractors or trailers including welding and complex component changes (engine swings, frame rebuilds, etc).7.This work may include determining the initial estimation of required repairs or directing the estimation to a Mechanic who can further diagnose and estimate the required repair, cost and repair timeline.8.Must be able to communicate with internal customers (i.e. other shop associates, drivers, STLs, other maintenance shops, etc.) on such things as stances, wait times, reasons for repair decisions and status updates.9.May be asked to drive commercial equipment in the yard and on public roads which would then require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to diagnose problems and corrective actions were affective.10.Charges out parts removed from inventory and assist in maintaining parts inventory.11.Utilizes parts book, the computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems, identify and locate parts.12.Responsible for general janitorial duties.Job Requirements
EXPERIENCE SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
1.Technical or advanced degree, certificate or diploma in diesel engines, electronics, and/or related systems or equivalent amount of experience.2.Exposure to windows based computer systems, preferred.3.Diagnostic and troubleshooting competency relating to equipment repairs.4.Successfully demonstrated problem solving skills.5.Examples of teamwork and customer service skills, including good oral and written communication skills.6.Successfully demonstrated welding skills in non-standard situations and on varying materials.7.Provides own basic hand tools. (Other required tools will be covered by the Shop Manager or Shop Supervisor.)
