Chartered in 1746, and known as the College of New Jersey until 1896, it was British North America's fourth college.Position Summary: The Department of Athletics at Princeton University is seeking an individual with experience in maintenance of athletic fields who is willing to address the challenges of managing sports turf in a collegiate environment. The Sports Turf Technician must be organized, possess a strong work ethic, and be able to effectively communicate with coaches and department administrators. The Sports Turf Technician must be able to develop a comprehensive fertility and maintenance program for all university athletic fields, while also being able to properly and safely apply all fertilizers and pesticides. The technician must also safely and efficiently operate all turf related equipment used to execute work, being responsible for all seeding, sod work and turf cultivation of intercollegiate athletic fields. Candidate must have experience with maintenance practices specific to baseball and softball, including care of infield dirt and mound management. Candidate should also possess background in collegiate or professional soccer pitch management. The technician will also be responsible for Field Turf artificial turf in the football stadium as well as various athletic practice areas on campus. The duties which are performed by the Athletic Department's facilities/grounds staff go beyond operating equipment and/or doing grounds maintenance. Incumbents are required to be able to have knowledge of the layout and dimensions of various outside playing fields and to be able to prepare them (lining, setting up ropes, etc.) for intercollegiate contests as well as for daily practice. For both outdoor and indoor sports, the staff must be able to set up scoreboards, PA systems and field telephones. Staff must be sufficiently familiar with the operations of the various electronic and mechanical equipment in order to perform minor adjustments in the event of breakdown and/or failure. In particular, the Zamboni, which prepares the ice surface in Baker Rink, is somewhat complicated and requires a degree of skill to master. One salient requirement for our staff members is the ability to communicate with students, faculty, administrators, staff, coaches, officials, and the general public. When our facilities are not in use by our teams they often are rented to users from inside and outside the University community. Our staff members are often the face of Princeton University for outside rental groups. Staff members serve as the point of contact during events providing facility setup as well as information and directions. In some instances, the jobs performed by the facilities staff are similar for inside and outside contests as well as for special events. These include setting up bleachers, platforms, coach/team benches and tables for announcers, scorekeepers and radio and television crews. Essential Qualifications: 1.The ability to demonstrate dependability as the Department requires a flexible work schedule that varies season by season. Regular time hours will include weekends, nights and holidays as needed by the Department. Overtime hours are mandatory and are scheduled by the supervisor. 2.Routine lifting of heavy weight is anticipated. Applicant must be able to routinely lift 100 pounds and more on frequent occasions. Pushing, pulling, lifting, bending and ladder climbing are all considered routine and essential. 3.The applicant must demonstrate the ability to make decisions and work with minimal supervision. 4.The applicant must effectively communicate both orally and in writing. 5.This position requires a valid New Jersey driver's license. 6.Minimum 2 year degree in Turf Management. 7.Experience at the professional or collegiate level in high profile athletic field maintenance. 8.Ability to obtain New Jersey Pesticide Applicators License. 9.Knowledge of irrigation systems: operation and maintenance. 10.Ability to operate machinery relevant to turf maintenance. 11.Experience in keeping chemical and fertility records, as well as MSDS sheets. 12.Ability to work within budget parameters set by Associate AD, Facilities.
