FUNCTION OF POSITION
A Chief Psychiatrist, Correctional Facility (CF), under general direction, in a State correctional facility or headquarters, in the Department of Corrections, either (1) in a diagnostic or outpatient clinic plans and directs the preventive and corrective general medical and psychiatric work with offenders; or (2) plans and directs the psychiatric and mental health services programs in a correctional institutions; or (3) in headquarters, has statewide responsibility for the Department’s mental health program in such areas as program development, planning, standards and evaluation; to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; and to do other related work. Typical tasks of a Chief Psychiatrist, CF include: investigating behavior problems or mental disorders; examining, diagnosing, classifying, prescribing treatment and rehabilitation programs for offenders in a diagnostic or outpatient clinic and directing the staff engaged in this work; supervising and participating in the diagnosis, care and treatment of psychotic inmates in a correctional institution; securing and reviewing data on heredity, congenital, and environmental factors pertaining to individual offenders; reviewing medical examination findings for evidence of organic disturbances related to behavior disorders; applying findings of psychological examination; determining organic conditions related to behavior disorders and prescribing psychiatric treatment; giving or directing the giving of psychotherapy and other treatment for preventing and correcting behavior and physical disorders; directing and participating in staff conferences and clinics for the discussion of psychiatric problems of offenders and their care and treatment; recommending transfer, parole, or discharge of offenders, and recommending arrangements for the follow-up and after-care during parole; securing and training assistants; planning, directing, and evaluating their work and taking or recommending appropriate action with respect to their work performance; preparing reports and doing research on problems of delinquency and adult criminality; maintaining order and supervising the conduct of persons committed to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

SALARY RANGE
Range B $10,201 - $11,530 per month (Board Eligible)
Range C $10,697 - $11,692 per month (Board Certified)
All correctional institutions may authorize a “Hiring Above the Minimum” (HAM) a salary differential. Extraordinary qualifications, and experience and current salary will determine the actual starting salary for a Staff Psychiatrist. The hiring authority will review your credentials and evaluate your experience and recent earnings to determine if a HAM salary differential may be applicable.

• $3,950 Recruitment and Retention Bonus paid monthly at Pelican Bay State Prison only.

REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the Medical Board of California or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners. (Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the Medical Board of California or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners will be admitted to the examination, but the Board to which application is made must determine that all legal requirements have been met before candidates will be eligible for appointment.) AND Possession of a valid certificate in psychiatry issued by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry or eligibility for examinations for such certificate as evidenced by a written statement from either Board. (Applicants who are in the process of establishing specialty board eligibility will be admitted to the examination but the required verification must be submitted before appointment.) AND Experience: Two year of experience as a licensed psychiatrist in a correctional facility, in a psychiatric outpatient clinic or in a diagnostic clinic. (This experience may be either included in or supplemental to the requirements for a certificate in psychiatry issued by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.)
