Chief Environmental Engineer
Company: North America Mining Job Function: Engineering And Architectural Job Description: Develops, recommends, supervises, and assesses environmental safety, remediation and reclamation programs.
Supervision of environmental staff.
Work with operations groups to evaluate, enhance, and monitor environmental practices for the site.
Reports environmental compliance issues and makes recommendations to appropriate site management for correction.
Serves as Project Manager on large/complex environmental projects (e.g., compliance, remediation, or reclamation).
Evaluates and administers contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
Provides guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices, and existing/proposed local, State and Federal regulations.
Contributes to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for environmental systems and issues.
Oversees or investigates and maintains records of environmental incidents and responses as required by law.
Maintains current working knowledge of Federal, State and local environmental and occupational health regulations (e.g., CERCLA, NEPA, SARA, Clean Air and Water Acts).
Oversees and coordinates all training mandated by EPA, DEQ or other body. Serves as contact with EPA, DEQ or other regulatory body in designated areas.
May represent the site on company-sponsored steering teams, e.g., PDMC Environmental Steering Team.
Performs other duties as required.
Bachelor’s degree in appropriate Engineering discipline (such as Environmental engineering, geology, hydrogeology, natural resource sciences or related area) or equivalent education and experience.
Ten (10) years engineering experience in environmental management including lead or supervisory experience.
Knowledge of environmental compliance, permitting, incident investigating and reporting protocols.
Ability to manage large/complex projects.
Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.
Able to analyze a wide range of soil, water and air samples to recognize potential environmental hazards.
Skilled in supervising, evaluating, training and motivating employees.
Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Preferred Qualifications:
Experience at mine sites is preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of New Mexico groundwater and surface water laws and regulations and their implementation requirements.
Demonstrated knowledge of ISO 14001 requirements and implementation.
Experience implementing and improving Environmental Management SystemsWork location is in a mine and manufacturing plant setting. Required to wear personal protective equipment in accordance with Phelps Dodge policies and practices. Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in an outdoor or plant environment including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear and other protective equipment as required.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, walk and move safely on hills and natural terrain and construction sites, talk, hear and see. Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday. Will be required to be on call and work during unscheduled times on an as needed basis.Must provide own vehicle in accordance with PD Runzheimer Plan. (The Runzheimer Plan is a business-vehicle allowance system designed to reimburse drivers for the operating and fixed costs of their personally provided business vehicles.
