The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) year-round internship program is a community based service learning program. Young adults are challenged to learn the principles of natural resource stewardship and the importance of sustaining Hawaii’s unique natural environment. Participants will spend 10-12 months “in the field” with natural resource managers, educators, scientists and community leaders actively participating in local conservation efforts while learning about Hawaiian plants and animals, native ecosystems, watersheds, historic sites, aquaculture, and the current demands being placed on Hawaii’s natural resources.
Availability: Full time, part time and minimum time (minimum time are summer only) positions will be filled by individuals between the ages of 18-30 who have demonstrated an interest in protecting the natural environment of Hawaii. Positions are available on the islands of Oahu, Kauai, Hawaii Island, and Maui. Positions may begin as early as November 2006 and will run through November 2007.

Position Information: No prior experience is necessary (with the exception of the Division of Aquatic Resources which requires SCUBA certification and scientific diver’s certification); however, the majority of the internship is spent outdoors and will be physically demanding. A positive attitude, an interest in learning, self-motivated, curiosity about nature, and the physical ability and desire to work on outdoor projects (with little or no supervision) will also be important. This is not a residential program and participants must provide their own housing and transportation to the internship site.
Participants will learn about the mission and programs of the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and will be placed in an internship including field positions with Natural Area Reserve, Division of Aquatic Resources, Wildlife, Forestry, Oahu Invasive Species Commission, Kauai Invasive Species Commission, West Maui Mountain Watershed Partnership, Maui Land and Pineapple Pu’ukukui Watershed and United States Fish and Wildlife Hakalau Refuge. In addition, there will be two environmental education internships, one with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife and the other with The Nature Conservancy (Oahu).
Members will generally participate in program activities Monday through Friday (as well as possible weekends and holidays). Full-time participants will receive a $1,250 monthly living allowance plus an additional $4,725 educational award that can be used to pay off college loans or can be applied to future college tuition (1,700 hours over a 10-12 month period). Additionally, for full time members, all interest earned on educational loans during the year of service will be paid for by AmeriCorps and health care benefits will be available. Part-time participants will receive a $625 monthly living allowance and a $2,362.5 educational award.
Participants will gain valuable education throughout the program and will meet potential role models who work in the fields of resource management and conservation biology. In addition they will gain career experience, improve in interpersonal skills, gain knowledge in conservation, and develop professional skills necessary for advancement in conservation and other fields.
