Communications Coordinator
Scope:
This position is responsible for assisting the VP of Communications with marketing, advertising and public relations functions that support the mission of the Science Center of Iowa as well as help achieve strategic and revenue-based goals.
The Communications Coordinator’s responsibilities will include but not be limited to: project management of events, promotions and print projects; accurate and creative writing of press releases, newsletters, mailings, posters and fliers; maintaining an updated calendar of events which includes understanding of activities within the broader Des Moines Community; researching and analyzing data; assisting in revenue generation through General Admissions, Special Event, Birthday Parties, and broader SCI programs and activities; and networking and representing SCI at local family events/festivals such as Kidsfest, Jazz in July, etc.Primary Responsibilities:
•Work with VP of Communications in developing strategic marketing plan that balances overall needs of the institution across revenue and departmental lines•Work with SCI department managers to establish proactive communications and marketing needs both for the short and long-term.•Work with Special Programs Coordinator to develop, manage and implement special events that drive traffic to the institution and create awareness of the SCI product
•Assist VP of Communications in establishing and maintaining trafficking system for both internal projects and projects being produced by advertising agency•Assist VP of Communications in writing copy for brochures, fliers, advertisements, newsletters, etc.
•Assist VP of Communications in writing press releases and distributing them to media outlets
•Work with VP of Communications and Group Sales Coordinator in developing letters, sales pieces, etc., that tap new markets and increase group sales to meet revenue goals
•Work with VP of Communications to expand and reach new target groups
•Work with vendors to secure printing bids for each project
•Work with VP of Communications and SCI Graphic Designer to update and maintain the content and look of the Science Center’s website
•Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience:
•College graduate in Marketing, Management or Business Administration or similar degree.
Skills:
•Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
•Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail
•Marketing/advertising background•Sales background helpful
•Experience in promoting special events helpful
•Ability to work with all types of people and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
•High energy level essential
•Smiling team player; positive attitude, service-oriented, self-motivated
•Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point experience necessary. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and HTML experience preferred.
Working Hours:
•This is a full-time position
•This individual must have a flexible schedule which will include nights and weekends as the job dictates.
