Unix System Engineer/Administrator
The Unix System Engineer/Administrator will be responsible for interfacing with other IT and business groups, understanding high-level requirements and architecting, designing, developing and maintaining server and application infrastructure solutions to meet business needs. They will be responsible for the administration of servers for a number of mission-critical call center systems for the credit card division. This key team member will be responsible for installation, support and monitoring, and maintenance of servers, operating systems and application releases in a networked, multi-operating systems environment. This key role will monitor system performance and recommend/resolve related issues. The successful candidate collaborates well with application development teams and core infrastructure teams to ensure systems are stable, available, high-performing, integrated, scalable, redundant, secure and well maintained.
Description of Job Responsibilities/Functions:
Perform system administration in a Unix-based environment that includes web servers, Java application servers, database services, MQ servers, load balancers, etc.
Administer Unix servers and related/integrated application services to ensure high availability and optimal performance of systems.
Manage Unix server environment, including performance-tuning, monitoring and statistics reporting, and capacity planning.
Coordinate efforts with various application development (web, client/server and mainframe) teams and support continued application development efforts, with specific focus on interface standards and data transfer utilities to ensure functional and technical requirements are effectively met.
Support ongoing system application and performance testing efforts.
Work actively with network services and MQ team members to monitor system performance and utilization, troubleshoot potential performance and stability issues, and make recommendations to optimize system availability and performance.
Assist in establishment of a long-term vision for open-systems environment that is scalable, providing security, availability and performance.
Support web application & workflow administration tools such as Java, WebTrends, JavaScript, JSP.
Work with support and development teams to coordinate all proposed system changes through a structured change management process, including preventative maintenance, backups and recovery.
Prepare (periodic) administrative reports/activities such as usage reports, problem reports, upgrade plans, and procedural documentation.

Successful candidates must have proven skills and hands-on experience in the following areas:
Systems architecture and design, and must have actively participated in an end-to-end implementation (from inception to implementation) in a high-speed, high-transaction volume processing arena.
Strong communication, analytical, lateral thinking, planning and problem solving skills.
Proven knowledge and experience in implementation planning (and release management) a strong plus.
Highly collaborative problem-solver.
The person will work with business teams (customers), peers and supporting technical teams to define opportunities, assess alternatives, recommend solutions, and develop implementation plans to execute on recommendations.
Demonstrated ability to lead and implement technology solutions, must be able to prioritize issues and efforts so that teams are orchestrated the implementation of technologies, and must be able to measure utilization and benefits for tracking cost/benefits of implemented solutions.
Ability to recognize constraints and recommend practical/smart solutions.
Ability to apply multiple technologies to business situations, identify and apply productivity improvements, and blend the technical environment with strategic direction.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Business, supplemented by technical course work and a minimum of five years proven and progressive experience.
Knowledge and experience in Mastercard/Visa authorizations and fraud detection applications a strong plus.
Knowledge and experience working in credit card and banking systems a strong plus.Required Technical Skills and Experience:
Minimum of five years experience as a Unix Systems Administrator with at least three years supporting a highly available 24x7-production environment. Experience with complex integration of systems in a large scale environment is required.
Proficiency with High Availability systems, including hardware load balanced systems and cluster technology such as Veritas Cluster server.
Proficiency and Infrastructure/System experience on UNIX platforms (Linux, Solaris, and HP-UX), utilizing network (NFS) and SAN attached storage.
Working knowledge of application development tools and web server administration required (IBM Websphere Application Server, J2EE, Java, JSP, Servlets, XML/XSL, SOAP, Oracle 8i+, UDB, AIX, MQ, DASD).
