UNIX Engineer

The Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and implementing systems, as required, to support the technical capabilities at AutoTrader.com To be successful in this role one must be able to work effectively in a fluid, fast-paced environment. This role requires good communication skills, both with team members and business contacts. In addition, the successful Engineer must be able to work with minimal supervision on multiple concurrent projects.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
•Develop new or maintain existing systems based on specifications
•Develop, implement and maintain unit tests of systems
•Participate in the design of new or changing systems
•Participate in functional test planning and testing for the assigned application(s), functional area(s) or project(s)
•Participate in problem solving and troubleshooting for the assigned application(s), functional area(s) or project(s)
•Share knowledge by effectively documenting work
•Stay current with changes in the technical area of expertise
•Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of the assigned application(s), functional area(s) or project(s)
•Work with the team to ensure the quality of the assigned application(s), functional area(s) or project(s)
•Respond quickly and effectively to production issues and taking responsibility for seeing those issues through resolution.
•Mentor less experienced Engineers
•Provide weekly status reports on individual projects and tasks.
•Participate in on-call rotation of 24x7 support and be flexible in availability as needed
REQUIREMENTS
•Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience
•UNIX/Linux system administration – minimum of 3 years
•Strong communication and teamwork skills
•Strong technical problem solving skills
•Strong customer relations skills
•Ability to learn and apply new technology and methodologies in a distributed environment
•Ability to solve problems quickly and completely
•Solid understanding of security and network/distributed computing concepts
•Solaris 9 or 10 for SPARC and/or x86 in a production environment
•RHEL 3 or 4 in a production environment
•Writing UNIX shell scripts
•NIS, LDAP, NFS, DNS, SSH, Sendmail and Jumpstart
•Solstice Disk Suite, Veritas Volume Manager and File System
•Red Hat Satellite Server
•Apache 1.3.x
•Network Appliance filer administration
