Transportation Engineer II

General Description

Performs complex transportation engineering work such as geotechnical design, retaining wall design, structural design and foundation design related to bridge structures. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.

Essential Duties

Performs geotechnical engineer design work such as development of retaining wall layouts, sketches, and specifications and makes recommendations.

Designs retaining walls.

Performs global stability analysis of slopes and retaining walls.

Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators, designs and detailed drawings of foundations, retaining walls, and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.

Investigates material failures and fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.

Reviews literature, technical data, material specifications, procedures, and geotechnical reports.

REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience

Must be licensed by the State of Texas as a professional engineer. (Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the Texas Board of Professional Engineers within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.) Must have five (5) years experience in transportation engineering, acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer. Graduate-level engineering education may be substituted for engineering experience on a year per year basis. Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.

Conditions of Employment

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver and safety sensitive positions and will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

External final applicants for any departmental position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.
