GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Reliability Engineer (Sr. RE) is a NERC certified Reliability Operator and performs various functions in coordination with the PJM Regional Operations team in support of PJM’s role as the NERC Reliability Coordinator for the PJM footprint. The Sr. RE performs and directs others in the performance of the activities necessary to support the efficient and effective dispatch operation of PJM. The Sr. RE is assigned to the PJM control room and provides real-time planning, decision analysis and action initiation to ensure the reliability and stability of the electric grid. The Sr. RE works with the on duty Regional Operations shift team to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the bulk interconnected transmission system in accordance with NERC, Regional, and sub-Regional practices. The Sr. RE ensures that the reliability engineering team performs appropriate analysis from near term to real time periods to ensure that planned and unplanned conditions are managed in a manner that protects PJM reliability. The Sr. RE works as a member of the Regional Operations leadership team in the development of operating procedures, operating strategies and detailed work plans to meet the varying requirements for system analysis and monitoring. The Sr. RE ensures that appropriate situational awareness is maintained for all control room personnel and works with other support teams within System Operations to ensure that models and operational applications are maintained and enhanced as required.

Required:
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or related knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions and duties.
Five or more years of experience in the power/energy industry.
Availability for rotating shift work (Schedule initially rotates from 5:00 AM through 12:00 AM, 7 days a week including holidays.)
Must become a NERC Certified Reliability Operator before taking shift.
Must become a PJM Certified Transmission & Generation Operator within 24 months.
Receive a satisfactory recommendation from the PSP industrial psychologist.
Preferred:
An in-depth understanding of power system engineering concepts, principles, theories, regulations, standards, reliability concepts and techniques especially as they apply to PJM operations and planning.
An in-depth understanding of PJM markets and the relationship between market concepts and reliable operations.
An in-depth understanding of evolving industry regulatory issues as they apply to the PJM System and the role of PJM as an RTO.
Ability to apply expertise in solving new and complex engineering problems and developing innovative strategies.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to train, guide, or assist others to perform complex studies.
Demonstrated leadership experience including recruitment, training, work planning and performance evaluation.Essential Skills

Provide leadership to the Reliability Engineering team including recruitment, training and performance evaluation for team personnel.
Perform certain NERC Reliability Coordinator functions as defined by NERC Policy, including the monitoring of the parameters that may have significant impacts within the Reliability Area and with neighboring Reliability Areas
Review the accuracy and impact on reliability of the grid for pending interchange schedules
Determine availability/shortage of operating reserves needed to maintain reliability.
Issue Energy Emergency Alerts as appropriate.
Perform analysis of flows versus limits at key facilities (particularly inter-Control Area, inter-Regional and inter-Reliability Area interfaces)
Perform time error correction and Solar Magnetic Disturbance (SMD) notification.
Coordinate Security issues with other Regions.
Actively participate in the NERC and inter-regional Hotline discussions, assist in the assessment of security of the Regions and the overall interconnected system, and coordinate actions in anticipated or actual emergencies.
Disseminate information within the Reliability Area in a timely manner.
Perform system frequency analysis and direct the resolution of significant frequency errors, deviations, and real-time trends.
Share with other Reliability Coordinators any information regarding potential, expected, or actual critical operating conditions that could negatively affect other Reliability Areas.
Conduct analysis on the availability/shortage of Interconnected Operations Services required.
Identify sources of large Area Control Error (ACE) deviations, discuss (or direct) corrective action.
Assist the Control Area operators in re-establishing normal system configuration as requested and coordinate communications as required in controlling islanding within the prescribed timelines.
Serve as the primary contact for disseminating information to neighboring Reliability Coordinators and Control Areas not immediately involved in system restoration activities.
As required update or perform voltage collapse studies in applicable regions.
Confirm study results and determine the effects within PJM and adjacent Reliability Areas.
Participate in PJM’s Daily Review Team and Detailed Analysis Team to evaluate the effectiveness of PJM operation.
