Status: ExemptSpecial Instructions:A civil engineering degree is required. Previous civil engineering experience related to electric substation design is desirable. This a hierarchical position. Placement within the compensation levels (Specialty Engineer through Principal Engineer) will be commensurate with the candidate’s skills, education and experience. This position requires occasional overtime, on-call duty and after hours emergency support.
The exciting project opportunities for this position may include direct involvement in design engineering and project coordination for the nearly 1 billion dollars worth of the large scale 345 kV and 115 kV substation/transmission projects (CAPX2020) that Xcel Energy has planned in the next 5 to 7 years. CAPX2020 and regional transmission upgrades for wind generation in SW Minnesota lead the list of major projects providing unique opportunities for the properly qualified and motivated candidate. Relocation may be offered for this position.Xcel Energy reserves the right to close this position at any time.Position Summary:Work as a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter of the functional area of the assignments, plans and conducts work requiring judgement in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Requires sufficient professional experience to assure competence as fully trained worker.Essential Responsibilities:
a) Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of related specialties. 70%b) Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects. 10%c) May supervise or coordinate the work of engineers, drafters, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments. 20%Xcel Energy reflects our core value - excellence in energy products and services. REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, or equivalent, plus appropriate continuing education. Engineering-In-Training or Fundamentals of Engineering certification is required. Licensed Professional Engineer certification is desirable. Membership in Professional Society (Associate or Member Grade)and/or Technical Societies (Associate Grade) is preferred. Requires three or more years of experience equivalent to Engineer II, depending upon performance.
