Solid Waste Transfer Station & MRF Design Lead

CH2M HILL, a global engineering and construction firm with extensive engineering experience in solid waste management, is seeking a senior engineer or architect to lead its solid waste transfer station design practice. This is a new position.

The transfer station/MRF leader will be responsible for leading major design and design/build projects for solid waste transfer stations and materials recovery facilities (MRFs) worldwide. Responsibilities include marketing, project pursuit, client relationship management as well as project management and design management and review.

Expected division between business development and project work is 50% - 50% on an annual basis.

Marketing and Business Development:
Develop firmwide strategy for expanding business related to solid waste transfer station and MRF planning, design and construction. Identify specific opportunities fitting in with the strategy. Assist regional marketing teams in evaluating opportunities they identify. Participate in go/no go decisions with global and regional management teams. Lead strategic project pursuits with the assistance of marketing and proposal production teams.

Project Management:
Manage major projects and provide senior review to provide design approach consistency and quality assurance across the firm. Project management includes responsibility for project planning, profit and loss, and client communication. Project managers are assisted by CH2M HILL’s accounting and CH2M HILL’s project delivery system (PDS). PDS provides project planning tools and weekly reports of resources used and progress in formats tailored to specific projects.

Technical:
The transfer station/MRF lead will be the arbiter of technical standards for facility design firmwide, and will be responsible for maintaining these standards at or above current market requirements. The transfer station/MRF lead will also be responsible for promulgating these standards firmwide. Active mentoring of mid-level and junior staff is expected.

Staff Supervision/Administration:
The position does not have direct staff supervision responsibility except on a project-specific basis. Experienced design engineers, architects and others needed to fulfill the specialty engineering tasks will be assigned by regional and global management teams, with assistance and concurrence by the project manager. The transfer station/MRF lead will be expected to provide performance review input for staff working on project pursuit and execution.

Position Reporting:
The position will have global responsibility. Marketing and strategy development will be funded by both CH2M HILL global and regional organizations. The position will report to the regional business group manager in the transfer station/MRF leader’s home office. All CH2M HILL employees are assigned to a home office operations leader who will assist with daily administrative tasks such as expense and time reporting, office equipment, travel assistance, etc.
