Software Engineering Manager

This engineering manager will manage the Linux Desktop development team, providing strategic direction for the team and ensuring that tactical activities are running efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for delivering the Desktop product, creating and keeping an engineering schedule, and handling staffing, budgeting and performance management for your group.
- Actively participate in core team meetings and customer meetings as instructed.
- Solicit organizational buy-in, gain support, delegate, and follow-up to assure on-time completion of clearly defined goals.
- Work closely with Product Management to define proper product goals that are based on customer and market factors. Be willing to take product direction ultimately from Product Management.
- Work with Desktop Architect to make sure that all development work is done within the framework outlined by the desktop architecture specification.
- Effectively communicate and work with customers and fellow employees to define and meet group objectives.
- Consistently seek ways to improve upon existing processes and services.
- Serve as a liaison on projects between divisions, functional areas and partners. As part of the resolution process, the Manager must be able to reconcile conflicting points of view, balance the needs and desires of the partner with Novell's best interests, while maintaining effective working relationships.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering (EE/EET), Information Systems, Business Administration or equivalent experience.
- Experience with open source Linux development, and with the Gnome platform specifically, are strongly preferred
- Minimum 2-5 years management experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications and presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively, freely and concisely to influence, negotiate, convince. Excellent team player.
- Ability to handle difficult or political situations while maintaining poise and professionalism.
- Strong leadership ability - confident, resilient, persistent, and solutions oriented.
- Ability to see big picture, while not losing sight of necessary details.
- Proactive self-starter.
