Senior Scientist (Development)

POSITION SUMMARY



Development of new friction materials and technologies, alternative friction materials and product concepts, core technologies for friction materials and friction interfacial phenomena and understanding necessary for the design and development of new generation Friction Systems products.



Dissemination of the acquired technologies, concepts, core design theories and design methodologies to the Business sites in the form of written documents / reports / computer presentations / and oral presentations will be required. Candidate will also be responsible for acting as a technical consultant to the Business Units regarding these new friction materials and core technologies understanding and new product concept transfer.



Borg-Warner Advanced Technology Center consists of three major Departments: Advanced Friction Products R&D; Advanced Manufacturing Technology; Advanced Transmission System Technology. The Advanced Friction R&D Department is supported by Mechanical Friction Test Laboratories, Prototype Laboratory and Tribology Laboratories. Candidate is expected to interface effectively with each of the above Departments.



The TS product needs are largely based on market directions and analysis. Candidate is expected to identify and define the technologies necessary for the facilitation of the design and development of such products.



KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES



Identify and develop product design technology by

Identifying product sensitivities

Determine the sensitivity of the product design to the performance of the mechanical components and assembly

Identify those parameters of which our competitor's products are more sensitive

Develop product performance theories

Develop scientific theories that explain observed product performance

Develop mathematical models to support these theories and which can be used to predict product performance

Conduct laboratory research in support of the theories and models

Publish internal and external engineering papers defining the product performance phenomena, scientific theory,

and supporting laboratory research





Design and develop new Friction Materials



Create product design concepts

Develop product concepts through to a functional prototype

Create and supervise a testing program, which will map-out the limitations and required component specifications

of new product

Document and design methodologies, limitations, and specifications for the new product, and internally publish

these documents



Provide analytical basis and understanding to the engineers at the TS business units and NSK-Warner



Develop scientific theories that explain product performance

Using mathematical models, analyze the product in regards to the performance theory

Conduct laboratory research in support of the theories

Publish internal documentation defining the product performance phenomena, and the supporting analysis and

research



Plan, direct and coordinate the timely execution of assigned projects

REQUIREMENTS


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE



Prior experience in friction materials development for "wet" clutch, dry brakes, or friction related applications



1 - 5 Years industrial experience



Research experience in friction test methods and test equipment



Familiarity with analytical methods and computational methods



Ph.D. in Material Science, or Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering or Tribology preferred



Strong communication skills



Self starter



Demonstrated potential for Project Management



Demonstrated abilities in both Research and Development
