Senior Roadway Designer

The Oregon Department of Transportation was established in 1969 to provide a safe, efficient transportation system that supports economic opportunity and livable communities for Oregonians. ODOT develops programs related to Oregon’s system of highways, roads, and bridges; railways; public transportation services; transportation safety programs; driver and vehicle licensing; and motor carrier regulation.

SENIOR ROADWAY DESIGNER

The main purpose of the Senior Roadway Designer is to be a member of a design team that provides complex design support for the largest reconnaissance and feasibility studies, highway projects, and planning studies that involve many design requirements and constraints. At times this person in this position will perform the lead designer function and direct the work of other designers. A current, valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license is required for this position. This position is located in Salem.

As a Senior Roadway Designer you will:
• Develops conceptual and preliminary designs using mosaics, topographic mapping, as-built plans, quad sheets, and field survey data that respond to the project objectives and other criteria. Considers many factors when designing, including traffic analysis, environmental constraints, state and local planning documents, as well as structural, geotechnical, utility, drainage and other engineering issues in the design process.
• Participates in the development of schedules, budgets, work plans, and problem statements. Assists in developing goals and objectives, and evaluation criteria.
• Prepares design concepts, preliminary designs and cost estimates for planning studies.
• Assists project teams in screening concepts and advancing concepts for further study and more detailed analysis.
• Designs interchanges for both freeway and non-freeway facilities including horizontal and vertical alignments. Determines detailed geometric configuration based on appropriate design standards, constraints, and guidance from project team.
• Reviews consultant and local agency plans for compliance with state and federal highway standards for roadway.
• Provides technical assistance to district managers and Region traffic engineers, planners and other designers.
• Makes presentation to project team, local agencies and citizen groups.
REQUIREMENTS
Position Qualifications include:
• A valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license in Civil, Structural, or Transportation-related engineering; AND
• A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
• Experience in roadway design is preferred.
