PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Evaluates, designs, documents, installs, implements, tests, and performs problem isolation and resolution; and monitors, tunes, sets standards and maintains a range of computer network components and systems. Performs these functions across some, but not all, physical media, protocol stacks, hubs, routers, bridges, gateways, and network management components. Provides client consulting and training on the interface and use of the network facilities. Begins to plan research; evaluate and recommend new computer network equipment; and utilize new technologies. Uses monitoring, performance analysis, network management, software and hardware equipment to troubleshoot and isolate problems; gauge network performance; and trace data and protocol activity. Devises solutions to operational problems within the capacity and operational limitations of installed equipment. May develop and execute contingency plans for network software and hardware failures including isolated and major outages. Provides internal consulting, technical guidance, information and support to application developers; computer operations; workstation support; company management; and departmental clients.
DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide expert administration services for enterprise firewalls to include firewall planning, implementation, integration, installation, maintenance, upgrading, operations and troubleshooting.
• Troubleshoot connectivity issues involving user and application access through the firewalls.
• Provide configuration management of all supported firewalls, including rule set management and configuration documentation.
• Provide expert evaluation of firewall platforms and products, and participate in the evaluation of other major network hardware and software products.
• Participate in the testing and acquisition of the firewall and networking products. Performs error analysis and sophisticated debugging for major enterprise network malfunctions and application anomalies related, but not limited, to firewalls, routers, switches, and transmission media.
• Provide technical guidance to IT Specialists in all aspects of firewall planning, analysis, installation, and debugging of malfunctions and software anomalies.
• Assist IRS Management in developing, implementing security policies and configuration standards.
• Install, modify, and maintain complex telecommunications hardware and software.
• Assist in the planning, analysis and implementation of the network infrastructure.
• Experience managing several distinctive firewall platforms in a large, complex multi-vendor network environment.
• Experience with Juniper’s Netscreen firewall platforms.
• Experience that demonstrates an in-depth understanding of Wide Area and Local Area Network (WAN/LAN) services, transmission protocols, equipment, and tools
• Experience that demonstrates familiarity with new and emerging IT developments, applications, and technologies and their applications to a network infrastructure and its security; and experience developing complex technical reports.
• Must be able to work extended hours on occasion, and be available to accept and work problem calls outside normal tour hours as directed by the IRS.
Travel to other IRS locations may be required
REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED: 7 years experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science.
SKILLS: Operating Systems: UNIX/Windows/NT
Hardware: Sun Unix Systems
Software: Symantec Raptor Firewall.; Checkpoint , PIX, Netscreen firewall products
Other: 2+ years of DNS experience in a production envirnonment. Must understand the 7th layer protocol stack, RIP routing, Ethernet and Serial, TCP/IP ports, UDP ports, proxy, cache technologies, and multicasting.
DESIRED: Software: 2+ years of routing experience on any vendors box (Cisco preferred).
