1. Provide metallurgical training to Bearing Business Plant associates. Assemble appropriate training aids (examples of different microstructural characteristics). Train the plant associates on BBU metallurgical standards, specifications, and procedures. Recommend a course of action as to further training requirements, equipment upgrades, or procedural changes.

2. Provide metallurgical investigational for standard metallurgical evaluations as assigned by and under the direction of the manager. These investigations would include a review of all relevant specifications, a visual examination of the submitted samples, a metallurgical evaluation per specification (sample preparation, hardness check, chemistry check, microstructural examination, case depth via microhardness, double etch for grinding injury, macro etch for grain flow and/or porosity, etc.) and a thorough, well written report.

3. Understands and controls all aspects of the technical photography equipment and procedures used in the CMC. Oversees the use of the digital metallography camera to ensure all photographs are of the highest quality. Takes all macro-photographs and non-digital micrographs.

4. Performs residual stress analysis and retained austenite analysis when required to complete a material analysis or to support material or process development.

5. Assist materials engineers & metallurgists with material, process and heat treat development programs. This includes metallographic analysis, hardness testing, residual stress and retained austenite analysis, mechanical testing and conducting heat treat studies.

6. Performs and controls all aspects of the mechanical testing required by plants or engineering for production release test or for internal investigations. The mechanical testing includes tensile testing of both metals and polymers. This includes the responsibilities of maintenance and calibration of mechanical test equipment.

7. Understands and performs all non-destructive testing capabilities within the CMC.

8. Prepare metal specimens for different analytical methods, perform coating weight analyses of conversion coated metal specimens as needed, and conduct metal analyses using the optical emission spectrometer (OES) as needed.

9. Performs and conducts carbon and sulfur, and oxygen and nitrogen determinations using combustion methods(Leco) as needed. This includes the required instrument maintenance and standardization needed for proper operation and accurate results.

10. Assist with sample login and tracking, general housekeeping of the laboratories, dishwashing, gas bottle/tank movement, liquid nitrogen filling of EDX detector.

REQUIREMENTS


Requirements: High School graduate with 7-10 yrs. experience or Associates degree in a Technical field with 4-8 yrs. experience. Experience in performing metallographic analysis, preferably of steel and/or bearing microstructures.
