SOFTWARE ENGINEER IV

Job Description:Developer will work in a team environment with NMAO staff to maintain existing MFC/C++ and .NET/C# applications and implement new software programs in .NET/C# as required. Work must adhere to NMAO design policies and procedures. Work will be on site at NOAA Silver Spring Headquarters, and some travel to ships and NOAA facilities will be required. Sailing on NOAA vessels and charters for short cruises not to exceed two weeks in duration is occasionally required to certify software. All attempts are made to schedule travel with 1-2 week notice however ship schedules sometimes necessitate travel on short notice. The work is challenging and the installation and certification of custom software on NOAA vessels can be exciting.
Travel generally is usually to U.S. ports but is often located in exotic places such as Alaska, Hawaii, Central America and Deep Water Oceans of the world. The work supports identifying and maintaining ocean resources, protecting the environment, and understanding how the ocean affects world climate. Requirements: * 4 or more years experience programming in a combination of C,C++ and C# * 2 or more years experience programming for the Microsoft .NET platform in C#. *
2 or more years experience programming real-time data acquisition applications in either C# or C++ * 2 or more years experience with interfacing .NET applications with databases (Either Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server). * Strong object oriented design skills, knowledge of design patterns. * Ability to quickly switch tasks or multitask * Ability to understand and modify software written by other team members * Ability to efficiently integrate changes to source code that is Simultaneously worked on by multiple developers and to work closely with team members communicating frequently * Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing * Ability to work independently when not part of a team * Ability to conduct briefings and user training * Ability to write user documentation * Ability to develop requirement and design documentation * Ability to track and document progress on tasks and develop reasonable milestones for completion * Familiarity with BOTH Oracle and Microsoft SQL Databases in the following areas: o DBA experience in either. o Database Design o Stored Procedures o API development * C++ experience programming MFC applications. * Experience with ESRI GIS software, particularly MapObjects. * Dundas Graphics experience. * ASP.NET experience. * Visual Studio 2005 Experience * Familiarity with network and serial interface hardware * Familiarity with Network Administration for
