Project Engineer for Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG)
POSITION SUMMARY
Successful execution of VTG specific sub-tasks that meet VTG performance objectives while fulfilling schedule and cost targets as part of larger turbocharger programs. Project tasks include all aspects of design and validation of VTG assemblies and components such as vane rings, vanes, vane levers, fasteners, and turbine housings, as well as others. These projects will encompass clean sheet component design and revision control of mature designs. These tasks will include basic design, material selection/validation, CAD modeling and drawing creation, thermal, mechanical and aerodynamic analysis, component/product validation, prototype procurement, and supplier/customer interaction.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Performs basic design and Pro-E modeling and related drawings of VTG components.
Performs stack-up tolerance analysis of VTG components and assemblies.
Selects component materials and wear couples based on turbocharger environmental conditions while considering strength and tribology at high temperature.
Manages the analysis of VTG components for stress, deformation, heat transfer, and aerodynamic loads.
Performs VTG inspections and root cause failure analysis.
Writes/Develops/Executes test plans, specifications, engineering work orders, and reports.
Designs/Develops unique test stands as required.
Analyzes pertinent test data and writes qualification/validation test reports.
Issues design change requests based upon engineering analysis of test data.
Works with project teams that include product development, application engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and laboratory staff to achieve technical and commercial goals.
Works with other engineering groups to develop design practices and test procedures.
Works with lab technicians to develop test practices.
Travel to BWTS, customer, and supplier facilities as dictated by project progress.
Possesses proficiency or has the ability to be trained to design tools and techniques indicated on "Design Tools and Skills Matrix."
Understands and adheres to current quality and control policies.
Understands and adheres to current health, safety, and environmental policies.
Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Must have 5-10 years design and development experience with automotive, industrial, or aerospace turbo machinery and/or reciprocating engines.
Must have a strong background in thermodynamics, compressible fluid flow, machine design, and material properties (preferably at high temperature).
In addition, technical competence with CAD, GD&T, and test instrumentation is required.
A background or experience with high temperature aerodynamic devices, FEA, or CFD is a plus.
Experience with turbochargers preferred.
Experience with the high temperature end of turbo machinery is desirable.
Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).
Ability to manage suppliers when procuring hardware and developing new processes.
Knowledge of lab practices using pressure transducers, temperature transducers, flow meters, accelerometers, microphones, and other vibration or noise measuring instruments.
Good written and oral communication skills, as well as good organizational skills.
Works well with suppliers from concept to part procurement.
