Patent Agent - Aviation GPO
Business Unit: GE Infrastructure, AviationFunction: LegalResponsibilities: * Responsible for preparing, filing, and prosecuting U.S. patent applications. In carrying out these responsibilities, Patent Agent will, as required:
Conduct patentability studies for new product introductions.
Work with marketing and engineering functions and Patent Evaluation Boards to review invention disclosures and make patent application filing decisions to maximize the scope of world-wide patent protection reflective of business strategic goals.
Work with outside counsel to assure all patent applications filed and prosecuted by outside counsel will contain claims of the broadest possible scope and will withstand judicial scrutiny in litigation
Follow Six Sigma IP practices and procedures in creating and managing patent intellectual property rights that have a positive impact on business bottom-line while simultaneously driving increased levels of productivity.
Work with the Director - Global Patent Operation, Patent Counsel & Leader - Aviation GPO, and IP professionals in GE's Aviation and Transportation Businesses to execute a strategy for procuring United States and international patents for those businesses.
Responsible for preparing, filing, and prosecuting U.S. patent applications.
In carrying out these responsibilities, Patent Agent GPO will, as required,
1) conduct patentability studies for new product introductions,
2) work with marketing and engineering functions and Patent Evaluation Boards to review invention disclosures and make patent application filing decisions
3) work with outside counsel to assure all patent applications filed and prosecuted by outside counsel and issued patents are robust, valid, and enforceable, and
4) follow six sigma IP practices and procedures in creating and managing patent intellectual property rights
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: * Undergraduate Degree in science or engineering from an accredited college or university.
Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Substantial intellectual property legal experience.
Science or engineering degree and a minimum of 3-4 years experience in drafting and prosecuting U.S. patent applications in the mechanical, chemical, electrical, or aeronautical arts.
Demonstrated understanding and command of U.S. patent laws and regulations and of United States Patent and Trademark Office practices and procedures.
Experience working with outside counsel and internal management and business teams in creating effective world-wide patent portfolios.
Outstanding technical and writing skills; strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively and concisely.Desired: * Knowledge of laws, regulations, practices and procedures relating to procurement of patents in countries other than the U.S.General: * GE has established a Global Patent Operation (GPO), headquartered in Wilton, CT. The GPO will also have co-located operations at GE Aviation and GE Transportation, GE Healthcare, GE Energy, GE Plastics and Silicones & Quartz.
This new organization, as its primary goal, will implement the in-sourcing of GE's strategic patent procurement, improve quality management and oversight of GE's outside counsel patent procurement relationships, coordinate and integrate administration of procurement and maintenance activities and foster closer coordination and cooperation between research teams and patent professionals in the GE businesses.
The GPO will also have responsibility for procurement of all GE foreign patents corresponding to its US priority applications.
