Optical Fiber Splicing Engineer

The primary focus for this engineering job is to provide fusion product developmental and customer support to customers in the OEM market space; thus enhancing AFL’s Fusion Splicer Systems sales opportunities and long term profitability. This involves determining near and long-term customer & market needs for product features, splicing methods & processes, and splicing parameters, and implementation of solutions to meet those needs.

In the factory/laboratory market most engineering developmental activity will focus on emerging and cutting-edge splicing applications involving large diameter fibers (including non-circular fibers, double-clad fibers, etc.), fiber lasers, splicing of “holey” (microstructured) fibers, oil & gas applications, military & medical fiber applications, fiber sensors and the like. Job responsibilities and activity will involve developing methods, procedures, tooling, splicing parameters, test methods, software development, and identification of needed splicer enhancements and features.

Other job functions include the following:

(A) Customer and AFL associate training
(B) Preparation of documents (white papers, M&Ps, operators’ manuals, presentations, specifications, training materials)
(C) Providing engineering assistance to the AFL Fusion Splicing Systems Technical Services group for their activities involving splicer product repair & troubleshooting, and general customer support
(D) Providing communication of activities and market needs within AFL as well as providing such insights to the Fujikura splicer team in Japan

Activities during customer visits will include general technical sales support, investigation and documentation of customer and market needs, customer training, and assistance to the customer to help implement processes and technical solutions to meet customer needs or challenges.
