Standard Job Description:
Designs and plans network communications systems. Provides specifications and detailed schematics for network architecture. Provides specific detailed information for hardware and software selection, implementation techniques and tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity requirements. Conducts testing of network design. Maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc. Evaluates and reports on new communications technologies to enhance capabilities of the network.
Typical Minimums:
Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 5 years of professional experience; or 3 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree. Considered career, or journey, level.
Specific Job Description:
1. Candidate will lead the technical effort in designing a gateway solution for data transport between two dissimilar networks - an airborne hybrid optical/RF network with large packet jitter, and the internet. Key design issues include (a) network address compatibility and translation; (b) packet timing control (metering and jitter correction) between the networks; and (c) end to end application layer performance. 2. Candidate should possess several years experience in network design, including a thorough knowledge of IP and Ethernet protocols. Experience in developing network solutions leveraging COTS equipment (routers, high performance software and servers, RAID systems) is also required. 3. Candidate should have a demonstrated ability to bridge "out of the box" network solutions with a practical approach to system implementation, including clear requirements development and documentation. The project will be a collaboratively driven effort between architecture and systems and software engineering with an aggressive implementation schedule. 4. A strong interest and willingness to participate in the implementation and test process is required. 5. Other desirables: (a) network storage experience; (b) experience with application layer protocols, particularly video; (c) knowledge of SONET Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
