In this capacity, the engineer will develop a fire protection design criteria and project execution plan for the facility based on NFPA guidelines, insurance company requirements and the Owner’s standards. After approval of this criteria and plan the engineer is responsible for the design and procurement of the fire protection systems specified including fire water pumps, underground fire water distribution systems, sprinkler systems, deluge systems, foam systems, fire and gas detection, and alarm systems. The fire protection engineer will review the work of the other discipline engineers on the project for conformance to fire protection requirements. These reviews might include fire wall penetrations, extent and type of fireproofing, process equipment spacing and facility access and egress. The fire protection engineer is also responsible for defining the extent of hazardous electrical areas based on the recommendations of NFPA and API. Qualifications and Skills: Bachelor of Science in Engineering Minimum 10 years experience in fire protection engineering for industrial facilities. Strong working knowledge of NFPA standards is required and knowledge of the Factory Mutual Engineering Data Sheets would be helpful.
