INSTRUCTIONAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN - ART
West Valley-Mission Community College District

Under direction of an assigned supervisor or designee at Mission College, operate an instructional art laboratory at Mission College and maintain equipment, tools, materials and supplies; facilitate student learning by providing assistance to faculty and students; tutor individual and small groups of students in technical aspects of the instructional program.

ASSIGNMENT
100% of full time, 37.5 hours per week, 10 months per year; Work schedule may change due to include some evening or weekend hours as needed. Work Location: Mission College.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
$2,976 entry level / $3,893 maximum earnable excluding longevity and educational growth

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to:
Two years of college course work in art or closely related fine arts discipline AND
Two years of experience in an art-related field of work.
Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translations of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar documentation will NOT suffice, thus will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.
Demonstrated ability to work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Laboratory equipment, supplies and materials typically used in community college art, craft and sculpture labs.
Oil and water-base paints, chalk, charcoal and other paint media.
Sculpting and metal casting techniques.
Health and safety precautions used in an instructional lab.
Instructional principles, practices and methodology.
Operation and maintenance of an instructional art laboratory.
Record keeping methods.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
Operation of microcomputers, peripheral equipment, office machines and audio-visual equipment.
Ability to:
Operate and maintain an instructional art laboratory at a community college.
Operate, maintain and demonstrate the use of specialized equipment, supplies and media used to create artistic materials.
Provide instructional guidance and assistance to art students in a learning laboratory environment.
Plan and organize work.
Work independently with little direction.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Maintain timely and accurate records and reports.
Perform clerical work using modern office practices, procedures and equipment, including a microcomputer.
Learn instructional methods and techniques.
Train, schedule, supervise and evaluate student workers if assigned.
Perform work in compliance with health and safety regulations.
Facilitate learning activities and opportunities for students.
Prepare instructional materials for laboratory activities.
Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment.
Relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds using tact, patience and courtesy.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty of the position satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
Operate an instructional art laboratory; provide learning opportunities in a practical setting in which students receive instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, metal casting and other areas.
Order, receive, store and inventory equipment, supplies and materials for laboratory use; issue and distribute instructional materials for student use in the art lab.
Set up, operate and demonstrate the use of specialized equipment typically found in community college art, craft and sculpture laboratories.
Provide instructional guidance and assistance to individual and small groups of art students; reinforce concepts, techniques and practical applications presented by the instructor.
Prepare and maintain a variety of records, logs and files related to equipment inventory and purchases, locks, keys, sale of supplies, and various student records.
Maintain a clean and safe learning environment in the art laboratory; maintain equipment and schedule repairs as needed.
Operate specialized equipment used in an art laboratory including tools, brushes, chalk and paint media, foundry equipment and other devices and materials.
Communicate with instructors, vendors and suppliers regarding art laboratory purchases, operations and equipment.
Prepare, duplicate and distribute study aids, handouts, examinations, laboratory assignments and exercises and related instructional materials.
Train and provide work direction to student assistants.
Perform related duties as assigned.
