Environmental Health and Safety Assistant -Environmental / Occupational Safety
UMB's Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking an Environmental / Occupational Safety Assistant. This position, under direct supervision, independently perform a wide range of moderately complex assignments related to regulated or hazardous chemical, radioactive, and infectious waste management to include collection, fieldwork, research, training and field analysis, and various waste treatment/disposal activities such as incineration, compaction and neutralization. Conduct laboratory audits for chemical, biological, radiological and general safety hazards. Performs other duties as assigned or required, including but not limited to, instructing scheduled classes and participating in cross-functional team projects such as the University's hazardous material emergency response team. Overtime is not anticipated and there is limited travel.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Health Physics, Environmental Science or natural science. One or more years experience in a related and applicable field highly preferred. The preferred candidate will have prior regulated or hazardous chemical and radioactive experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Ability to read, comprehend, and apply federal, state, and local environmental, occupational health and safety, fire and life safety, hazardous waste, radiation safety, and asbestos regulations, codes, and requirements; to prepare technical reports and analyses and maintain required records; to learn and apply evaluation and survey techniques including the use of environmental sampling devices and analytical equipment; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to operate computers and other standard office equipment; to work in, on, around, under and over fixed equipment and machinery; to lift and transport assigned tools and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments; to work with hazardous materials; to wear and work in personal protective.Salary commensurate with experience up to $37,000.
