EDUCATION / PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The Program Coordinator is an essential member of the Education and Visitor Services staff of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center. The individual in this position works closely with the Director of Education and Visitor Services to develop and deliver programming to support the Stowe Center’s mission and strategic goals.

The Stowe Center’s mission is to preserve Stowe’s Hartford home, provide a forum for vibrant discussion, and inspire individuals to embrace social justice. Harriet Beecher Stowe is the author of the influential anti-slavery novel, “Uncle Tom's Cabin,” which changed the way Americans viewed slavery and influenced the abolition movement before the Civil War. Stowe, the most widely read 19th century American author wrote more than thirty books and was a member of the culturally significant Beecher family. The Stowe Center is an international heritage tourism site, and a museum, program center, and research library, which includes three historic buildings on 2.5-acres with extensive library and artifact collections.

In concert with the Director of Education and Visitor Services, the Program Coordinator develops and implements programs, design and continually update a repertoire of tours, activities and curriculum that utilizes innovative interpretive techniques and includes the latest scholarship on Stowe and her era. In addition, the Program Coordinator anticipates and responds to visitor needs and interests.

The Program Coordinator has primary responsibility for creating and tracking departmental and program budgets, promoting and booking group tours and programs, and overall administrative support for the department. In addition, the individual in this position is responsible for recruitment, training and evaluation of interpretive staff and museum teachers, and creating monthly staff schedules. The Program Coordinator sets the standard for excellent interpretive and customer service skills, and plans and implements training classes and field trips.

The Program Coordinator is a full-time position and reports to the Director of Education and Visitor Services. Some weekend and evening hours required.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:
--Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, education or relevant field with at least two years experience; or five years of relevant experience. Training and supervisory experience a plus.
--Superior organizational, written, and oral communication skills with the ability to be an articulate representative of the Stowe Center
--Facility managing multiple projects at various stages of planning, implementation, and evaluation and a proven track record of delivering within deadlines
--Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the capacity to take charge, problem solve and achieve organizational objectives
--Able to relate effectively to people of various ages, cultural backgrounds and levels of education
--Ability to work independently and as part of a team with high energy and a positive attitude
--Commitment to the mission and goals of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center
--Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
--Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
