Continuing Appointment System, Annual Year (12 months)
Duties: Director of Experiential Education and Employer Relations. Reports to the Associate Dean of Engineering. Supervises Associate Director for Cooperative Engineering Education Program. Closely coordinates activities with the MSU Career Services and Placement Office’s field representative to the College of Engineering. May supervise support staff and student aides. In cooperation with these personnel, develops and implements a full set of services to ensure MSU engineering students maximize early opportunities in the workplace and obtain competitive placements upon graduation.
As Director of Experiential Education, develops, leads and implements curricular and co-curricular initiatives in experiential education (co-op program, internship placements, undergraduate research, etc.). Works with students and academic advisors to assist students regarding job search strategies, resume preparation, interviewing skills and related activities. Teaches career-related courses, course modules and/or seminars; depending on interests and qualifications, may develop and/or teach other courses in ethics, professional issues, project management, etc.
As Director of Employer Relations, has primary responsibility in the College of Engineering for developing, maintaining and enhancing relationships with employers and professional organizations in support of career opportunities for our students and graduates. Initiates and develops contacts through calls, communications, site visits, attendance at professional conferences and meetings, etc. Travel may exceed 60 days per year. For on-site employer campus visits (career fairs, conferences, student design presentations, etc) plans and facilitates connection of employers to key engineering administrators, faculty and student groups. Develops marketing plan for rational allocation of efforts.
Coordinates with Dean, Department Chairpersons and faculty to understand evolving target employment destinations and program strengths and interests. Coordinates with same to leverage the utility of corporate visit schedules. Coordinates with the Engineering and University Development offices for employer contacts that include potential for gifts, and employer contacts with identified major corporations. Coordinates with Engineering Publications office to ensure that college media are consistent with employer development materials and message provides service to the college by service on relevant university and college committees, attendance at administrative meetings, assisting in college recruiting and outreach activities, working with student organizations, and/or related activities.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, Business, or closely related field. Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience will be considered. Five or more years progressive experience in corporate relations, human resources, academic career placement or similar field. Knowledge of issues facing the engineering employer base, engineering students and engineering researchers. Experience working with technical employers, researchers and students. Teaching, lecturing or mentoring experience in an academic or business setting preferred. Marketing experience preferred. Proficiency with office computing software; valid driver’s license and availability to travel. U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
