Technician Job Description
Purpose: The Technician reviews, tests, compiles and distributes software from a central management perspective using district provided tools, troubleshoots software problems in the field and with other technicians. Hardware duties are also a main component to this position as all software must interact with the hardware to which it is installed.
General Responsibilities
The Technician shall:
1. Package approved district software as an MSI or snapshot using director approved utilities for central distribution and management.
2. All software packages will adhere to the district standard for quality control, testing, documentation and licensing.
3. Maintain and document all software inventory, distribution history and licensing.
4. Assist other technicians in troubleshooting software failures in the field.
5. Assist with hardware related workorders as requested by supervisor.
6. Other duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties
1. All software will be tested in the following sequence:
A. Installed according to the manufacture’s instructions on a standard testing machine in the testing lab. All registrations, companion or dependent software noted. General understanding of how software functions will be obtained.
B. Using a freshly imaged machine not imported into the network tree, a snapshot or MSI will be created using ZEN Works or Wise Package Studio.
C. Once a successful package is created, testing will continue with the packaged software on all types of workstations and laptops in the district. Testing will be conducted with admin rights, staff rights and student rights. All problems, special installation requirements, or other concerns will be documented.
D. Field testing will be conducted in the location the software is to be distributed to. In the event this is a district level application, testing will occur at all locations before the software is distributed. Field testing will be coordinated with the technicians, Sysops and the Software Engineer. All district wide applications must have approval from the Senior Systems Engineer.
2. Completion of the software quality control checklist is required for each software title distributed and will be presented to the Software Engineer for review.
3. Using tools in place, an inventory of all software, its distribution and licensing will be maintained in a current state and available for audit. Any concerns or issues will be presented to the Software Engineer.
4. Technician will assist other technicians in troubleshooting software problems in the field. This may require going to the location, speaking to users, contact vendors or tech support.
5. Technician must have an understanding of the hardware the software will reside on. Assisting other technicians in the field or in the lab to resolve hardware issues will be ongoing.
6. Examples of other duties as assigned may include but are not limited to reimaging, cleaning or workstations, and completing various helpdesk tickets as requested by users.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Graduation from an accredited high school.
2. Documented work history testing and packaging software into snapshots or MSIs for a minimum of two years.
3. Documented work history troubleshooting hardware related issues for a minimum of two years.
4. Entry level hardware or software certifications such as Dell hardware, A+, CNA, etc.
