CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST
NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE
in a state of the art Level III+ NICU
Functions as a clinical role model, educator, consultant, and researcher. Provides direct care within specialty area to individuals and families. Coordinates, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care to ensure quality patient care. This CNS would be responsible for all educational activities, classroom instruction, and competencies for the staff of a 23-bed Level III+ NICU. The CNS will provide education services to a total of 35 RNs.
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
Plans patient care and collaborates with health care team members in overall evaluations, diagnosis, and treatment of patients. Collaborates with appropriate persons or groups to define, develop, implement, and evaluate standards of practice and care.
Notifies staff of direct care interactions and provides written documentation of same.
Assesses needs; analyzes and coordinates teaching and education programs for patients and staff.
Ensures the coordination of realistic and measurable objectives, teaching strategies, and teaching time frames in designing education programs. Considers cost-effectiveness and the utilization of learning theories.
Facilitates, plans, organizes, evaluates, and identifies nursing problems for evaluative or scientific investigation. Participates in and reviews research applications, and incorporates research findings into practice.
Serves as a resource to colleagues and consumers of health care.
Develops strategies to effect change based on current literature. Supports and initiates change in health care delivery system; provides instruction, guidance, and follow-up as appropriate.
Interviews candidates for selected nursing leadership positions as requested.
Ensures that records are kept in compliance with regulatory agencies requirements.
Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and services improvement teams.
Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
There are six peer Clinical Nurse Specialists and eleven Education Specialists at this facility that meet regularly to support education efforts throughout the hospital. There is a strong shared governance model in place and the CNS can elect to serve on a variety of nursing councils. This organization plans to take the Magnet survey within two years. This position reports to the Clinical Administrator for Women's & Children's Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
Masters prepared RN with CNS or NP background in NICU environment. Certified as CNS or ANCC preferred. 2-5 years staff RN experience in a Level III NICU and 1-2 years experience as a CNS.

This is with a 350-bed, acute-care community hospital, Consisting of 2,600 employees and 850 physicians. Named one of the Top 100 hospitals in the nation. The modern Women’s Pavilion supports 2,900 deliveries (1/3 are high risk) a year and has the area’s only Level III+ NICU.

CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST
PEDIATRICS AND NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE – PICU & NICU
CNS position would provide clinical education services for a 14-bed Pediatric Unit and a Level III, 26-bed NICU with 14 Critical Care beds and 12 Intermediate Care beds. Would be responsible for all clinical education, staff education, patient education, family education, community education, unit orientation, needs assessment, in-services, staff competencies, disease research and policy research on the unit. Will establish and monitor PI indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of training and education. Serves on committees such as Patient Care Practice, Documentation, Joint Practice Committee, Product Standards, and Practice Improvement. Position reports to the Director of Nursing Practice, Education and Research and would be a member of a 14 employee Nursing Education Department made up of Masters prepared Clinical Nurse Specialists and Education Specialists. The CNS is on a peer level with the Unit Nurse Manager, working together to address staff education and development needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be RNs with a minimum of a Masters Degree in Nursing; prior clinical experience in Pediatrics and/or NICU.

CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST
PEDIATRICS AND PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE – PEDS & PICU
Actualizes quality patient outcomes within the institution and community through utilization of advanced knowledge, preparation, skills, experience, and expanded practice base. Analyzes the practice setting in a continuous improvement framework, initiating and evaluating the impact of change. Leads the clinical pathways systems initiative, ensuring continuity among all areas of the health care system. Establishes and maintains standards of practice at the client, unit, hospital, corporate, community, and national levels. Initiates and participates in strategic planning at all levels of the health care system. The CNS is responsible for the educational support primarily on the 37-bed Pediatrics Unit and the 8-bed PICU. Willingness to learn the CNS role for the 21-bed NICU preferred. This CNS will be a peer of and work with the Pediatrics & PICU Manager and the NICU Manager. This position reports to the Administrative Director of Women and Children’s Services.
Leads and/or facilitates the continuous improvement process for the clinical and extended care pathway system initiative. Leads and/or facilitates collaborative practice groups to improve the delivery of quality services and care for the health management of clinical and extended care pathway populations. Provides formal and informal dissemination and presentation of outcomes management and process improvement findings and recommendations. Establishes and maintains standards of practice for selected populations at the client, unit, hospital, corporate, community, and national levels. Coordinates, facilitates, provides and evaluates health management programs for patient/family, staff, and community education within the Health Care System, educational institutions, service organizations, and other health care facilities. Provides innovative and collaborative leadership in professional practice, patient centered care, and health management by role modeling, mentoring, and consultation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced Practice Nurse or Clinical Nurse Specialist with a Master’s degree. Current CPR certification. Three to five years of clinical experience in Pediatrics and PICU. Prefer experience in research, quality improvement, and data analysis and staff education. Also has word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation program abilities. Previous work experience communicating complex theoretical and technical concepts to healthcare members, developing and presenting formal educational programs, and collaborating effectively with other healthcare members. Demonstrated group facilitation, problem solving, and analytical skills. Prior experience in Neonatal ICU is a plus.
