COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION COORDINATOR

SALARY: $3,626- $4,407 (Grant position)
(plus City pays 8% of employees’ PERS contribution)

This is a full-time, benefited, contract position dependent on grant funding and grant
performance. Incumbent will implement and administer a collaborative health promotion program, “Por La Vida,” targeting the Montclair Latino community. Varied working hours, evening and weekend work may be required.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Under the direction of the Human Services Supervisor, the Community Health Education Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating the day-to-day operation of the program; recruitment, training, and supervision of community lay health workers, known as “consejeras;” and initiating and maintaining contacts with community groups, public agencies, schools, and other institutions to facilitate the implementation of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Graduation from High School or G.E.D. and minimum three years’ experience in community-based health promotion and/or health program coordination is required. Bachelor’s Degree in public health or a related field is highly desirable. Ability to demonstrate leadership skills, and facilitate meetings and training sessions; and demonstrate experience with data collection, management and evaluation processes.

Knowledge of the principles of supervision and community relations; understanding of the social structure of the Latino community; and development of strong network linkages, including working with community-based agencies and organizations.

Ability to plan, organize, and implement community-based health education programs; have good communication skills, both written and oral; make program presentations; follow oral and written instructions; develop and maintain effective relationships with the community, volunteers, and staff; be an effective team player; delegate work, and monitor progress of that work; use a computer to prepare flyers and reports; and have excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
REQUIREMENTS
Must be bilingual/biliterate in Spanish and English and must have a valid California driver's license.

SELECTION PROCESS

3. Candidates with the best qualifications for this position will be invited to participate in a structured oral interview.
4. Names of successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list from which a selection will be made. The City Manager will make the final appointment, upon recommendation of the Community Development Director.
5. Successful candidate will be required to pass a Spanish language proficiency examination and a preemployment physical, including a drug screening, prior to hiring.
