Under direction of an assigned supervisor or designee at Mission College, produce alternate media such as Braille and large print materials, electronic text and closed-captioned videos. In addition, assist instructors or other academic staff assigned to Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) in providing instructional support to students with disabilities. Assist students in the development of compensating strategies and skills, including computer skills, as prescribed by the instructor, and in the use of adaptive equipment and alternate media.

*Categorical Program Status: The continuation of employment is contingent upon funding.

ASSIGNMENT
53.3% of full time, 20 hours per week, 11 months per year; Schedule may change to occasionally include some evening or weekend hours, as needed. Work Location: Mission College.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
$1,765 entry-level salary / $2,314 maximum earnable excluding longevity and educational growth (prorated salary)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to:
An associate’s degree (two years of college with completion of general education requirements) with completion of course work in alternate media production, access technologies for the disabled, computer science, computer applications, digital media, education, education of students with disabilities or closely related disciplines AND
One year of experience in a position with major responsibilities in the areas of alternate media production, access technologies, instructional support or training, computer support or operations, digital media, education of individuals with disabilities or other closely related areas of employment.
Of the included education and experience, a combination equivalent to 12 units course work OR six (6) months of work experience should be related to the computer skills required by this position.
Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translations of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar documentation will NOT suffice; thus, will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.
Demonstrated ability to work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
File formats used in alternate media production.
Specialized equipment, hardware and software including Braille, closed captioning, optical character recognition (OCR) and voice recognition software.
Principles of alternate media related to accessibility for students with disabilities.
Operation and use of computer-aided instructional programs and adaptive technology software for students with disabilities.
Instructional strategies and methods for students with disabilities.
Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
Knowledge of basic computer software programs, especially word processing concepts.
Operation and maintenance of an instructional lab.
Record keeping methods.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
Operation of microcomputers and peripheral equipment.
Ability to:
Create documents, transcripts and closed captioned media utilizing specialized hardware and software.
Perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy and meet tight deadlines.
Work independently with minimum supervision.
Perform a variety of instructional assistance and support functions in an instructional laboratory or classroom environment.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Facilitate computer-aided learning activities and opportunities according to programs prescribed by the instructor.
Operate, demonstrate and maintain computer-assisted instructional materials for individuals with disabilities.
Operate and maintain office and audio-visual equipment.
Maintain a clean and orderly learning environment.
Understand the special needs of students with disabilities.
Relate effectively to people of varied academic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy and courtesy.
Sit and operate a computer for long periods of time.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty of the position satisfactorily. Produce information in alternate formats in a timely manner. As required, convert educational materials to alternate formats consistent with the needs of a student’s specific disability.
Examples of such alternate formats are Braille, large print and audio format materials, electronic text and other media.
Adapt electronic instructional media in a timely manner. This would include the closed captioning of videos and / or multi-media materials.
Set-up and maintain a variety of adaptive equipment.
Support the installation, maintenance and use of instructional and adaptive software.
Serve as a resource for access technologies and alternate media.
Provide instructional support to individual and small groups of students with disabilities in accordance with courses of study prescribed by the instructor; reinforce concepts presented by academic staff.
Provide instructional support and guidance to students in a variety of subject areas; schedule and assist in the assessment of student progress.
Guide students in utilizing computer-aided learning programs and equipment; demonstrate the use of adapted technology and audio-visual media equipment and materials.
Operate and demonstrate the proper use of computers, peripheral equipment, various software programs, videocassette recorders, A-V equipment, copiers and other machines.
Duplicate, issue and inventory instructional materials and study aids for use by students, staff and instructors using the lab.
Under the supervision of specialists, administer portions of assessments to diagnose student ability to utilize adaptive software and computer-aided instruction and to benefit from academic instruction.
Prepare and maintain logs, files and records related to student progress, correspondence, assessment, student time sheets and equipment inventory and repair.
Respond to inquiries and answer questions regarding supportive learning assistance for students with disabilities.
Maintain a clean and safe learning environment in the classroom and instructional laboratory; open the classroom and set up equipment.
Prepare, duplicate and distribute handouts, assignments and other instructional materials; establish and maintain effective systems for circulation, processing and utilization of instructional media materials.
Train and supervise student workers; demonstrate the operation of equipment and methods and techniques used to assist students with disabilities.
Perform related duties as assigned.
