Sr. Mfg Project Engineer-Logistics/Packaging

BASIC FUNCTIONResponsible for the design, implementation, and improvement of structural packaging for Generators, Switchgear Cubicles, Automatic Transfer Switches, Service Parts, including maintenance of Domestic and International Shipping Requirements. Responsible for supporting Capital & Project needs for the Shipping, Receiving and Warehousing departments. Responsible to identify, lead and complete productivity, continuous improvement and cost reduction projects in their assigned areas.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIESDesign, document, and evaluate packaging applications for new and existing Power Systems Americas products, incorporating technology, efficiency, and creativity.Monitor shipping and load planning activities, ensuring standards are established and maintained for this activity (axle weights, securing loads, international requirements).Ensure Sales and Shipping has all necessary information on product to perform shipment planning and loading of trucks.Work with Purchasing and Suppliers to define and ensure that the packing used meets the needs of material flow inside the plant.Provide team leadership for stock handlers and materials handlers for projects that require significant material moves.Support Materials departments in implementing and sustaining Demand Flow Technology (DFT). (examples: Clear visual communication for kanban & pull systems, lot sizing for materials stored on line, handling low volume items, ordering items from external warehouse)Implement capital projects in Shipping, Receiving, Warehouses and Production areas to ensure that equipment and systems are in place to meet material flow needs.Champion continuous improvement (KOS events/workshops) and Cost Reductions efforts in the area of responsibility to constantly improve the process and lower the cost.Provide technical support and monitor critical processes in the department.Provide required support for ISO 9001. Work closely with ISO coordinating team and production employees to ensure compliance to ISO 9001 standards. Follow procedures established for Manufacturing Engineering to execute design changes, implementation of procedures and reference documents, and all documented responsibilities of Process Engineering.Monitor new technical developments for possible application in the department.Occasional travel to international facilities to coordinate similar efforts as neededRELATIONSHIPS AND CONTACTSSupervisory Relationships:Reports to Supervisor of Manufacturing Engineering - Assembly.Organizational Relationships:Frequent contact with Americas Power Systems Production Supervisors and personnel to formulate area layouts, process changes, and new equipment requirements.Frequent contact with Americas Power Systems Sales department personnel to coordinate projects involving shipment of Finished Goods product.Frequent contact with Materials and Purchasing departments to evaluate packaging requirements of incoming material.Occasional contact with Design Engineering/Marketing personnel to coordinate Finished Goods Packaging requirements.Occasional contact with Maintenance department to maintain and improve existing machinery & equipment used in production processes.Occasional contact with Quality Engineering to maintain and improve quality procedures and ISO 9001 requirements.Occasional communication with Corporate Purchasing for equipment quotations and to issue binding purchase contracts.External Business Relationships:Frequent contact External Suppliers to address packaging requirement needs.Occasional contact with tooling, equipment, mechanical, electrical, and HVAC vendors for quotations and project installations.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSB.S. degree in engineering plus five to ten years experience in a Manufacturing environment. Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing cost reduction and continuous improvement projects is desired but not necessary. Experience in packing, shipping and material handling is also desirable.
