Distribution Center Traffic Manager
Objective:
Responsible for overseeing all aspects of store delivery transportation for distribution center and the stores serviced by the regional distribution center. Includes budgetary and financial responsibility to ensure cost efficiency and maintain service standarads. Requires strong leadership skills to train, supervise, lead associates and drive process change to improve cost effiencies. Must be able to work with peers (Ex: Shipping Manager), DC Director/Managers, and Store Mgmt (District Managers, Store Managers) to drive process improvement.
Primary Job Functions:
Manage and execute all transportation operations for the Distribution Center and Store delivery process.
Identify and implement process improvements within all areas of the Regional DC network that affect efficient transportation (ex: Store delays, routing, carrier failures, loading practices, etc).
Accountable for optimization of routes and delivery scheduling to reduce expense and meet on-time goals.
Accountable for implementation and reporting of daily freight cost metrics and on-time delivery statistics.
Accountable for carrier billing accuracy and forecasting freight spend within KPI standards.
Accountable for yard operation efficiencies. (Hostling)
Accountable for DC and Carrier compliance to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for transportation.
Accountable for maximizing "other" cost efficiencies (delay time, etc) while meeting store related service standards.
Walk the floor regularly to assist the shipping manager and leads with loading practices and optimization practices on outbound trucks.
Communicate pertinent information to DC Mgmt daily on special events or seasonal business issues.
Responsible for coordination and execution of transporation in support of special events or seasonal business issues. (Example: Ski Packup, recalls, RTV’s, Advertised Goods deliveries, Hot Market events in the DC region).
Report and resolve any potential safety issues with Risk Management and any asset protection issues with Asset Protection as needed.
Ensure Dock safety & compliance to Dept of Transportation regulations (Example: Haz Mat) are promoted and achieved.
Training and Developing:
Assst shipping manager in training Leads & associates on productivity, loading/unloading practices, operations, safety and asset protection.
Problem Resolution:
Identify solutions to all DC or Store complaints & issues and provide immediate implementation of corrective action as related to transportation.
Follow up on all problem resolutions to ensure the corrective actions are being maintained and meet expected standards and results.
Forecast expected impact on costs and report resolution cost changes to Director of Transportation.
Provide regular updates to the Corp. Transporation Director on compliance to delivery standards and problem resolutions.
Key Metrics & Expected Cost Performance:
Freight Budget Responsibilities….Improve expense TY vs LY excluding fuel expense as measured by KPI’s. (Key metrics are included but not limited to total cost, Rate per mile, cost per 100lbs, Delay Time, etc.). Improve shipping dock payroll CPU as measured by KPI’s.
On-time Performace……Improve & maintain on time delivery within published standards as reported by Asset Protection and measure by KPI’s.
Forecasting Expense…..Forecast expense weekly and with an accuracy rate compared to actual billed cost as measured by KPI’s.
Operations Management:
Plan daily transportation routes in advance and execute with carriers to maximize DC Operations and store delivery efficiencies while minimizing costs.
Make adjustments to transportation schedule to provide flexibility as business needs dictate.
Work to maximize efficiency of cross functional departments in the facility. (Example: Yard Hostler sharing between shipping and receiving)
Ensure Dock safety & compliance to DOT regulations are promoted and achieved.
Set goals and conduct regular review/training meetings with DC Mgmt to review ontime performace and cost efficiency goals and targets.
Key Carrying Qualifications:
Key carrier for dock operations similar to Shipping Manager.
REQUIREMENTS
Prerequisite skills/experience for this position:
1 – 5+ years experience.
Excellent communication and leadership skills, and sound judgment.
Must display leadership and teamwork skills.
Detail oriented and strong attention to customer service.
Proficient PC skills.
College degree in business or logistics preferred.
Prior Transportation Management or Distribution Center (Shipping)
experience.
Prior experience managing people or proven ability to manage people.
Complete understanding and facilitation of SOP’s for areas.
