BACKHOE/LOADER OPERATOR
(may be used for assignment: Construction Crew)

RECRUITMENT DATES August 28, 2006 – October 6, 2006.

SALARY $16.91 - $21.55 hourly / $35,173 - $44,824 annualized.

EXPERIENCE Requires a minimum of two years experience operating commercial equipment over 2 tons, six months of which must be at the Backhoe/Loader Operator level; OR completion of a departmental training course (certified by the City of Phoenix Personnel Department); OR be qualified for “out-of-class” pay as a Backhoe/Loader Operator. Must possess an Arizona class “A” commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a Tank Vehicle “N” endorsement. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.

DUTIES Safely and efficiently operate a backhoe/loader and dump truck with trailer, boom truck, skid steer loader, trencher, well rig and other medium to heavy duty equipment as assigned. Works with a maintenance crew or as a laborer when not operating equipment. Some positions serve as lead workers over other departmental employees. Currently there is one vacancy in the Water Services Department.

ALSO REQUIRED For all positions, individuals will be required to possess a class “A” Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement at the time of application and pass an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) medical examination at time of hire. Applicants are responsible for all testing costs. As a condition of continued employment, employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing, as required by law. Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings, and on “standby” may be required. Additional CDL endorsements may be required by the end of the probationary period. Some positions may require Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) certification.

RESIDENCE Maricopa County residency is required within 24 months after the date of hire and must be maintained.

EVALUATION Based on your application and demonstration exam. The demonstration exam includes a pre-trip inspection, system air brake test, operation of a dump truck with trailer, and backhoe on a closed course. Only applicants who meet the requirements as stated in the “Experience” section will be invited to the demonstration exam.
