With more than 2,500 employees and $400 million in revenues, ProQuest gives its customers access to a body of information and images that is unmatched in breadth and depth.POSITION OBJECTIVE:Under the direction of the Manager, the incumbent provides onsite and on-call support (up to 24x7) of all aspects of the supported systems in a business- and/or mission-critical, revenue-generating, multi-million dollar operating environment. Primary responsibilities include assisting in the development of SLAs and service catalogs, coordinating and supervising all functional resources involved in modifications to and problem analysis of system infrastructure; providing advanced system support, recommending system enhancements to engineering teams, design and implementation of software for reports, statistical analysis, and automation of processes; and deployment of new or updated systems into the production environment. The incumbent has full responsibility and authority to resolve complex system problems from the identification of the problem through its final resolution.
This position is requires mentoring of more junior staff and working directly with engineering, vendors and product development teams on system enhancements, or problem resolution.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Guarantees the availability and efficiency of ProQuest Information and Learning's UNIX infrastructure. Possess the ability to work under pressure and during 'off-hours' to resolve technical problems which result in system downtime or degraded service.
Must be an independent, self-motivated, detailed-oriented, and highly organized individual with strong research and problem solving skills capable of managing multiple complex tasks and quickly adapting to changing priorities.
Manage the relationship between vendor Technical Staff and IL - Work with vendors and other IT groups to resolve issues.
Monitor systems to insure that automated and manual activities complete successfully, perform planned and unplanned changes in the production environment, provide support for after hours maintenance activities in the production environment.
Meets with designated PQIL business units on an on-going basis to insure their systems requirements are being met. Lead or work as a technical member of project teams which will recommend the proper course of action for the proactive fulfillment of PQIL's current and future business systems needs.
Fully documents all aspects of systems including system design and dependencies, change history, problem history, backup, restore and disaster recovery procedures and maintenance policies.
Develop automated procedures for the on-going support of systems including any training and support necessary to turn these procedures over to Data Operations for on-going fulfillment.
Continues to increase expertise by staying current with industry trends through technical journals and on-going education.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE:
Required: 6+ years experience supporting and managing changes in a 24x7 online production environment.
6+ years experience in supporting UNIX Systems (Solaris, Irix, HPUX, RedHat Linux).
Demonstrated expertise with Veritas Clusters Demonstrated knowledge of all of the following: TCP/IP, NFS, SAN Storage, troubleshooting multi-tiered client server systems and sendmail.
Programming and Shell scripting skills: (Some or all) PERL, Python, ksh, bash, csh, C/C++
Experience at sites with over 1,500 computers and multiple terabytes of disk space.
2-4 years of Storage Management experience (one of : SAN, NAS, EMC Symmetrix, EMC Clariion; Veritas Volume Manager and filesystems)EDUCATION:

Required:
Familiarity with the components that comprise an online service infrastructure including UNIX and WindowsNT servers, hubs, routers, data circuits and applications.
2-4 years experience providing 24 x 7 on-call support for highly complex distributed systems consisting of application, relational databases, multiple servers and network components
Excellent problem solving and fault diagnosis skills, especially for large complex systems.
