Researcher

The Battelle Biomedical Research Center (BBRC) specializes in the design and execution of research to develop countermeasures against highly toxic materials and pathogenic microorganisms for government and non-government organizations.
The BBRC is seeking a Researcher for the
West Jefferson, Ohio facility.

Compensation will be based on relevant qualifications and experience. Relocation support will not be provided.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Provide technical support for aerosol-related activities for projects including, but not limited to, operation of aerosol systems, calibration/verification of instruments, cleaning of instruments, data analysis and recognizes deviation from accepted practices.

Assist in the construction and characterization of aerosol generation and sampling systems in BSL-3 and chemical surety laboratories.

Support the operation of aerosol exposures chemical surety work for selected studies and the documentation of associated paperwork.

Document equipment calibration records and equipment inventories. Perform routine maintenance on aerosol equipment and maintain equipment calibration certification.

Document laboratory procedures and results, generate data analysis, and write progress reports.

Adherence to good safety practices is a critical job component.

Perform method development and/or validation/qualification of microbiology assays. Assist in drafting methods, SOPs, protocols, reports, and publications.

Assist supervisor in planning personal daily/weekly/monthly work schedule and training schedule to optimize time on project and development of technical skills.

Perform reading of SOPs used in workplace in a timely manner. Write or modify SOPs as needed. Can explain an SOP or method from anyone requesting assistance with a new or unfamiliar procedure.

Use proper technique to operate necessary equipment to produce high quality data. Operate routine computer programs and perform basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment. Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software. Ensure that all equipment used for microbiology is routinely maintained and/or calibrated.

Perform experiments, record experimental data, and analyze data using ratios, percentages, linear regression algorithms, and other basic mathematical and scientific principles, and basic interpretation of the data and makes recommendations based on the data which may go into reports. Organize study data and clearly communicates routine research procedures and results.

Conduct QC reviews of study data.

Ensure that the proper solutions are prepared, that solutions and reagents are not beyond their expiration date, and that the proper paperwork is maintained and recorded in notebooks. Responsible for ordering reagents, supplies, and equipment used for microbiology. Organize, clean, and maintain the BRC Biofacility microbiology and aerobiology laboratories in accordance with GLP and ISO guidelines.

Train less experienced staff on equipment use/maintenance or assay performance.

Work independently and effectively in a team environment and display an interest in developing job skills and in gaining additional expertise through training and/or educational study.

Maintain a good work attendance record and be punctual for all project work.

May interact with clients during tours of the aerosol lab.

Work occasional weekends and holidays.
REQUIREMENTS


Basic Qualifications

AS or BS in Biology or Aerosol Engineering.
Five (5) years aerosol science and/or construction experience.
Experience in a BL3 laboratory environment and knowledge of safe work practices and good laboratory practices is highly desired.
Obtain and maintain U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance.
Willing to be immunized with IND and/or licensed vaccines against laboratory pathogens and able to wear a respirator.
Respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations.
Be aware of and follow BRC Biofacility requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience using hand and machine tools is highly desired.

Experience in the design, construction, and characterization of aerosol systems for the dissemination of aerosols (dry powders and wet suspensions) in the respirable mass range.

Experience in the design and construction of atmospheric sampling systems, air flow measurements and system dynamic monitoring.

Experience in particle size distribution and airborne concentration measurement of aerosols and vapors using various times of flight, light scattering instrumentation, hydrocarbon, fluorometetry, and spectrometry analyzers, inertial cascade impactors, and gravimetric filter sampling.

Experience in the dissemination of aerosols and vapors using nebulizers, metered dose inhalers, venturies, diffusion cells, and fluidized beds.

Provide technical support for the task work and maintenance of the Biomedical Research Center (BRC) Biofacility Aerobiology laboratories.

Ability to monitor and maintain equipment and reagents logbooks.

Ability to perform task specific assignments; QC data review.

Applicant must possess strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work in a team environment and take direction from others.

Applicant must be familiar with MS Word and Excel programs.

Selected candidate must be willing to volunteer to be vaccinated with Investigation New Drug (IND) vaccines and be subject to a government security investigation. Applicant must meet all eligibility requirements, including U.S. citizenship, for a security clearance.
