Specialist-Public Relations
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that documents distributed by the Midwest Area Public Affairs department are free of all typos, misspelled words, grammatical mistakes, poor sentence construction, stylistic inconsistencies (using as references the department's style guide and templates, the Verizon Wireless general use guidelines and the AP Stylebook) and factual errors. (This position will be held to a strict quality assurance goal.) This position is pivotal to the department in that the person filling it will edit/proofread/fact check the majority of the documents generated by other members of the team for distribution to internal and external audiences and will write additional original documents for these audiences. The position is located in Schaumburg, IL.
1. Editing/Proofreading/Fact Checking - Edits, proofreads and fact checks approximately 200 news releases each year that are written by the five regional PR managers in the department and approximately 50 employee bulletins written by people in other departments. Most news releases average two pages in length. Most bulletins are only a couple of paragraphs long, but others may be a page or so in length. Responsible for ensuring that these documents are well written and contain no spelling, grammatical or stylistic errors and, equally important, that all the facts are correct.
2. Writes - Writes approximately 260 short (usually three or four sentences in length) pieces annually for E-Horizons, the company's daily electronic newsletter. Most pieces are based on news releases or other existing documents, but some are researched and written from scratch. Responsible for writing these documents and for making sure they contain no spelling, grammatical, stylistic or factual errors
3. Editing/Proofreading/Fact Checking/Writing Other Documents - Edits, proofreads, fact checks and/or writes other documents including, but not limited to, pitch letters, media alerts, presentations, letters, posters and copy for websites, as requested. Responsible for ensuring that these documents have no spelling, grammatical, stylistic or factual errors.
4. Posting - Posts these news releases, E-Horizons pieces, bulletins and selected other documents on the company's internal websites.
Job Requirements
BA/BS in journalism or English
5 years' experience as an editor/writer of public relations materials, with the primary responsibility being editing
.Other: Excellent written and oral communication skills
AP Stylebook proficiency
MS Office proficiency
