Media Relations Specialist

This Media Relations Specialist participates in a proactive and reactive communications program which includes aggressive placement of Academy information in newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and internet; writes news releases, fact sheets, and other materials; arranges media interviews with Academy spokespersons and other orthopaedic surgeons; provides media support to public relations programs. Staff liaison responsibilities as assigned.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops and implements a media relations program for important Academy initiatives. This includes proactively promoting orthopaedic topics and issues, such as research, advancements and the importance of injury prevention and responds to media inquiries.
Writes news releases, fact sheets, press kits, media backgrounders, letters to the editors, etc., as appropriate; ensures these materials are available to media on the Academy Web site.Responds to inquiries from the media, arranges for spokespersons and secures data and research for the media.
Assists in the planning and development of media activities at Annual Meeting, including managing the press room, press registration, media briefings, etc.
Works with Media Relations team on management and use of media list database, development of targeted media lists, news release distribution, evaluation of media relations programs and placement of media information on the Academy's Web site. Monitors current news for events of interest to the Academy.Provides public and media relations supports for orthopaedic specialty societies, committees and
Provides crisis communication support as needed.TRAVEL:Approximately 15 days per year
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Undergraduate degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations or a related subject; 3+ years of experience in a professional association or public relations agency with an active media or public relations program; experience in television, print, radio and internet media relations; strong organizational skills, ability to handle many projects at once to meet deadlines; above average written and oral communications skills, word processing/spreadsheet editing experience; Internet and computer proficiency.
