Communications Bureau Supervisor

The City of Irvine Public Safety Department seeks to fill a key leadership position with an experienced individual to supervise, plan, and coordinate the activities and operations of the City of Irvine’s Police Communications Center as well as provide complex and technical staff assistance to the Public Safety Department. The Communications Bureau Supervisor provides daily oversight of the entire Communications Bureau. The position directs a staff of 19 full time people which includes 4 Supervising Dispatchers and 15 Dispatchers. Strong communication skills are required as the Communications Bureau Supervisor responds both verbally and in writing to citizen inquiries and complaints as well as coordinates projects and maintenance needs with other divisions, departments and contractors. The Supervisor is the liaison between Communications and the Patrol Division and is responsible for maintaining a strong work relationship between the two areas. The Communication Bureau Supervisor is accountable for the 24 hour operation of the Communication’s Center. This position will generally work the 9-80 work schedule but will be required to work a modified schedule as needs arise. The position requires significant independent judgment and decision-making. The ideal candidate will need to be a strategic thinker with administrative strengths that support decisive decision-making skills to promptly resolve daily operational problems and issues. This recruitment will fill a vacancy and establish an eligibility list to fill future vacancies in this classification.
REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will possess a high school degree and have at least five years dispatch experience including two years in a supervisory capacity, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Completion of P.O.S.T. basic dispatch training required. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience indicating the ability to: • Select, train, evaluate and manage Communications Center staff; organize and schedules work assignments. • Direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for the Communications Center and identify methods for improving delivery of service. • Develop and implement goals and policies for the Communications Center. • Participate in development of related budget; monitor and approve expenditures. • Coordinate maintenance/repair of Communications Center equipment. • Coordinate communication activities with other divisions and agencies. • Provide staff assistance for support services; prepare staff reports and other correspondence. • Respond to and investigate complaints by citizens. • Act as liaison with related vendors, contractors, and consultants. • Represent Communications Center at community, city, staff, and committee meetings. • Coordinate technical aspects of radio/telephone communication needs with County of Orange and State administrations. • Monitor City’s security system; issue security access cards as appropriate.
