COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE OPERATOR
(POLICE DEPARTMENT)
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Receive, transmit, and record information essential to the communications function of departments and divisions utilizing, but not limited to radio, telephone, alarm, teletype, computer, and written documentation.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Communications Supervisor and in his/her absence, the on duty Lieutenant or Sergeant in charge at the Police Department.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)
Be familiar with and operate communications center equipment and facilities in a productive, accurate, and efficient manner so as to insure the optimum use of personnel, vehicles, and apparatus and to insure prompt response to situations requiring the attention of departments and divisions.
Answer and take appropriate dispatch, notification, or transfer action to incoming telephone calls.
Dispatch necessary personnel, vehicles, and apparatus.
Monitor and respond to message traffic on all radio systems taking appropriate dispatch or notification action.
Monitor and respond to alarm signals taking appropriate dispatch or notification action.
Transmit and receive by L.E.I.N., information essential to the communications function.
Disseminate by radio, telephone, and L.E.I.N., information essential to the efficient operation of departments and divisions.
Maintain accurate and legible typewritten and handwritten records and logs.
Maintain accurate status information of vehicles and apparatus.
Observe and monitor for proper operation, all equipment, reporting any improperly operating.
Perform non-technical preventative and appearance maintenance on communications center equipment and facilities.
Operate all systems in accord with applicable department and division rules and procedures and applicable rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission.
Operate such equipment and/or perform such duties as may be delegated as an element of the communications function.
Where applicable, maintain certifiable proficiencies in the operation of equipment and methods.
Perform related work as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:
Knowledge of city streets, landmark locations, and contiguous areas.
Ability to comprehend and perform under complex orders and operating procedures.
Mature judgment, calmness, and ability to adjust to changing conditions.
Ability to perform properly under conditions of stress and provocation.
Ability to work in coordination with other employees and the general public.
Good hearing, command of English language, ability to express instructions in short concise phrases.
Useful ability in the operation of a typewriter and computer.
Courteous and tactful mannerisms.
Legible handwriting and spelling ability.
Ability to comprehend and perform in accord with specialized training.
An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training and experience:
Graduation from an accredited high school or the equivalent.
Experience in emergency and non-emergency communication systems and/or operations preferred.
