MARCH OF DIMES- CALIFORNIA BIRTH DEFECTS MONITORING PROGRAM

POSITION SUMMARY
Research subjects include mothers who have recently delivered a child with at least one birth defect under study or a control group of mothers. Verbal recall of the respondent’s pregnancy and life experiences is supplemented by the collection of Buccal (Cheek cell) samples for DNA studies.
The position is located in Berkeley, CA. Nights and weekend shifts are required.

RESPONSIBILITY
Under the direction of the Interview Supervisor and with systems generated assignment call lists, the interviewer initiates telephone contact to conduct phone interviews with study subjects who have already been mailed information requesting their participation in the research studies. The interviewer documents online all efforts to reach and gain the cooperation of the study respondent.
The core of the job relies on the use of a CATI (computer assisted telephone interviewing) system with a standardized interview questionnaire. The interviewer conducts structured interviews which take on average an hour and fifteen minutes to administer. To assure acceptable Buccal return rates, follow up calls are made after Buccal kits are mailed out to each household where an interview has been completed. This is a critical ancillary effort.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and fluently in English and in Spanish. Good written communication skills. Ability to establish rapport with a wide range of people over the telephone.

•Ability to exercise good judgment, solve problems, and adapt to a variety of settings. Interviewers are expected to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

•High - average level skills with the Microsoft suite of products including Word and Excel.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school graduation or equivalent + 4 years work experience. AA degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience. BA may be substituted for 4 years of experience.
At least one year of paid or volunteer experience demonstrating the ability to deal with the public is desirable. Customer service, call center or other interviewing experience is preferred.

SALARY RANGE/BENEFITS
$35-36,000 annual conversion plus a generous cafeteria plan of 21.5% of salary to create a personal benefits plan. Any unused benefit money is paid out to employee inside of routine payroll. The CBDMP also offers 24 hours of accrued Paid Time Off per month.
