Underwriting Consultant

I. Position Summary:
The Underwriting Consultant is responsible for reviewing and evaluating the most complex Workers’ Compensation insurance applications, renewals, and repricings to determine risk acceptability and coverage for assigned book of business. Sets appropriate premium rates and coverage and answers questions from applicants and brokers regarding underwriting processes and decisions. Assists in training and coaching less experienced Underwriters.

Handles accounts > $100,000

III. Major Responsibilities:
1. Handles a well established and growing book of business for the agencies assigned. Accounts are the most complex and larger than less experienced Underwriters.
2. Manages multi-agencies, large volumes of business and new business development.
3. Reviews the largest and most complex applications, renewals, repricings, restrictions, cancellations and endorsements from smaller accounts to evaluate risk acceptability and coverage. Contacts applicants to obtain additional information as necessary.
4. Analyzes inspection reports, location, risk and credit reports to accept or reject business.
5. Prepares detail of work plans and schedules, completes detailed analysis and research, identifies options, prepares reports for management and recommends action or change for assigned accounts.
6. Develops test experience modifications for accounts.
7. Trains new and less experienced Underwriters on policies, practices and account management responsibilities. Develops department training materials as necessary.
8. Meets with agents and sales managers at agencies to discuss business opportunities or other account level matters.
9. Takes lead role in mid-term meetings as requested by management.
10. Maintains complete familiarity of new and commonly used underwriting concepts, practices, procedures and multi-line environments.
11. Sets appropriate premium rates and issues coverage.
12. Responds to questions from brokers and/or applicants regarding underwriting processes and decisions.
13. Adheres to the Employee Code of Ethical Conduct and completes additional projects as requested.
REQUIREMENTS
IV. Job Qualifications:
A. Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or related field or the equivalent in relevant coursework and experience.CPCU designation strongly preferred.

B. Experience:
Seven years’ experience in P&C/Workers’ Compensation underwriting,
Thorough familiarity with Workers’ Comp/P&C underwriting concepts.
Experience in a multi-line environment and with large, complex accounts.

C. Skills/Abilities:
Strong oral/written communication, interpersonal and customer service skills are essential.
Proficient in Microsoft Windows including spreadsheet applications and Microsoft Word.
Strong organization, multi-tasking and attention to detail skills required.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills required.
Strong marketing skills and abilities.
Project management and multi-tasking skills required.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
