Performance Responsibilities
Under general supervision of the Dean of Counseling, perform a variety of clerical and other assignments in support of the counseling staff; perform other duties as assigned in the Counseling Center.
a. Answer Counseling Office telephone calls.
b. Make appointments for students/public with appropriate counselor for academic advising, using computerized appointment systems, and keep accurate statistical records for accountability purposes.
c. Assist students in using the Career/Transfer Center and maintain materials for student use.
d. Maintain/update guidance forms, brochures, etc., using word processing.
e. Assist students in clarifying College Catalog and other printed college information.
f. Perform a variety of clerical support work, including typing and mailing routine correspondence, proofreading, and filing.
g. Use a computer for office tasks, including word processing to maintain, update, and print guidance forms and brochures.
h. Assist with probation and suspension notifications (mailing letters, making appointments, and tracking paper work).
i. Prepare purchase order requests for supplies.
j. Assist with new student orientation during registration.
k. Proofread Counselors' day and evening office appointment schedules for year.
l. Perform other related job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Faculty/Educational Administrators complete the Equivalency Application only if you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the position you are applying to, and you wish to be considered.
Knowledge of:
1. Various types of career and academic fields.
2. Modern office practices and procedures.
3. Business telephone etiquette.
4. English usage including grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
Ability to:
5. Use a computer and a variety of applications, including word processing, computerized guidance systems, spreadsheet, and database programs.
6. Recognize student's needs and problems and make appropriate referrals.
7. Organize tasks in an efficient manner and work with frequent interruptions.
8. Monitor information and maintain files and records.
9. Perform basic clerical duties and work with statistical data.
10. Type at an acceptable rate of speed (at least 30 wpm).
11. Learn the objectives of the programs to which assigned.
12. Speak clearly, concisely, tactfully, and patiently with students from a variety of socio-economic, educational, cultural, and national backgrounds, and of all ages.
13. Present information on the Career Library and/or Transfer Center.
14. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience:
15. At least one year of responsible clerical or technical experience, preferably in a the area of Counseling and Guidance.
16. Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications.
Desired Qualifications
1. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish or Vietnamese.
Conditions of Employment
This is a regular full-time, 12-month per year position. The normal hours of work will be 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

Pay Philosophy
Starting salaries for support staff positions begin at Step-1 of the salary range. The first salary advancement is at the end of the 6-month probationary period. Further advancements are on an annual basis.
Starting salaries for management and supervisory positions are based on a combination of education, qualifications and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on initial salary placement.
Starting salaries for academic positions are based on a combination of education and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on longevity and professional development. An additional annual stipend is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
Work Schedule
10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Fridays 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
Benefits:
The District provides a comprehensive benefit program effective the first calendar day of the month following the first day of regular employment. Dental and vision care plans for employees and dependents, and life insurance and income protection plans for employees are fully paid by the District. A variety of medical plans covering employees and their dependents are available, with the District paying the major portion of the cost. Other liberal benefits include, on an annual basis: vacation, 12 days the first year; sick leave, 12 days; holidays, averaging 12 days. Employees participate in both the Public Employees Retirement System and Social Security.
