Civil Engineer Dept: Senior Engineer / Plan Check EngineerTHE POSITION: Under general direction, the Senior Plan Check Engineer will be responsible for the activities and coordination of Building and Safety engineering services and related activities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:Supervises, reviews, and coordinate the work of assigned staffPerforms complex plan review of development projects including: drainage, grading, street, flood control, water, building, and structuralPerforms complex inspections; performs engineering design for city projectsPerforms a variety of technical tasks related to assigned dutiesDevelop and recommend policies and procedures related to assigned duties.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of workCommunicate clearly and consistently, both orally and in writing; performs related duties as assigned.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Reviews and performs routine and complex plan checks for commercial and residential projects, requiring reading visionConfers with builders, engineers, contractors, architects and the public concerning codes and permit requirements, requiring clear oral communication.Makes appropriate field inspections during various stage of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations of City, county, state and federal agencies, which requires full unassisted ambulatory activity including bending, stooping, walking on uneven surfaces, squatting, lifting objects up to fifty pounds, and climbing.Prepares written, computer keyboard and oral reports and correspondence, requiring hand and finger dexterity.Speaks before public and professional groups and responds to questions regarding the plans, objectives, and policies of the City, requiring clear oral communication and hearing ability to understand questions.Attends as necessary meetings of the City Council and City Boards and Commissions, requiring ability to sit for up to four hours at a time.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Civil Engineering or a related field, and five years experience in engineering work as a registered California Civil Engineer.Spanish speaking ability and experience in a culturally diverse community are both highly desirable.Knowledge and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern engineering.Knowledge of municipal operations and the dynamics of city government.Excellent customer service orientation; be a team player; be able to embrace change, and have the proven ability to provide creative, innovative alternatives to complex matters facing the City. Posses strong analytical, writing and verbal skills; and be skilled in computer and technological operations.Ability to work effectively with the public, City Council, City Manager, Department Heads and other City staff, and other agencies.LICENSE:
