Asbestos & Lead Abatement Principal Technician

Under the general supervision of the Asbestos and Lead Programs Coordinator, works both independently and supervised to: A) Coordinate projects with University Project Managers, Superintendents, Building Managers, Faculty, and Staff to provide technical services for the investigation and identification of asbestos, lead-based paint and other building related hazardous materials by conducting comprehensive hazardous materials surveys and drafting related reports. B) Assist the Asbestos and Lead Programs Coordinator with implementation of the campus-wide Asbestos and Lead Management Programs by performing inspections, coordinating hazardous waste shipments with vendors, providing asbestos, lead, and respiratory training to campus community, updating files and databases, and developing campus policies. C) Serve as a member of the Emergency and Hazardous Material Response Team as assigned by completing appropriate training and responding to hazardous material releases.
REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of basic principles of occupational safety and health
Ability to analyze complex technical data from asbestos and lead-based paint surveys
Ability to wear personal protective equipment including self contained breathing apparatus
Ability to conduct comprehensive hazardous material surveys including sample collection and material quantification.Ability to comprehend architectural drawings and blueprints
Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
Ability to carry and climb a ladder.
Working knowledge of the procedures and principles involved with asbestos or environmental remediation.
Ability to respond to asbestos or health related emergencies after normal University business hours.
Strong interpersonal and oral communication skill.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, administrators, managers, subordinates and academia.
Skill in setting priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
Skill in writing concise, logical, grammatically correct analytical reports.
Skill in interacting with persons of various educational, social and cultural backgrounds.
Ability to obtain required asbestos certifications within one year of hire and required lead certifications within two years or hire.
Ability to maintain quality control when collecting, processing or reporting environmental samples.
Ability to perform Phase Contrast Microscopy.
