Lead Systems Engineer - Web Services/Infrastructure

SAIC’s Space, Earth, & Atmospheric Sciences (SEAS) Business Unit provides the scientific, engineering and operational support for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Center for Earth Resources Observation & Science (EROS).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will lead a small team of systems and software engineers in the requirements analysis, preliminary and critical design, implementation and deployment of a communications and common services infrastructure based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) technologies.

Typical duties and responsibilities include: Supporting the investigation, analysis and deployment of data warehousing technology as a common service; supporting the development of an SOA implementation strategy (i.e. industry standards, data and service discovery, inter-process messaging and security; Identifying, defining and leading trade study efforts for the determination of COTS/GOTS, open source or hybrid technical solutions; developing a high level inter-process protocol to support interactions in a larger distributed system; providing oversight for a proof of concept, pre-trade and formal trade study investigations and recommendations; developing educational materials and conducting training for systems and software engineers on the SOA implementation strategy and inter-process protocol; coordinating SOA activities with other projects in support of the overall enterprise architecture; assisting with the definition of hardware and deployment strategies for physical data transfers; assisting and reporting to the lead engineers and cost account managers regarding schedule, budget and personnel issues.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, computer engineering or equivalent. 8 years of experience in distributed systems and/or systems engineering.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
Systems engineering skills including: A thorough, demonstrated understanding of systems engineering processes; crafting implementation and operational plans; preparing estimates; self initiative necessary to execute selected options and plans; requirements and design analysis; ability to work independently as well as part of a team; strong verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated leadership with a multi-disciplined team.

DESIRED SKILLS:
Prefer candidates with SOA knowledge/experience; web service deployments a plus.
