POSITION SUMMARY: In the Computational Research Division located at Berkeley, the Biological Data Management and Technology Center (BDMTC) is developing metagenome data management and analysis systems in collaboration with biologists in the Microbial Ecology Program (MEP) and Genome Biology Program (GBP) at the Joint Genome Institute(JGI). The Postdoctoral Fellow will carry out research and development of new analysis methods for metagenome data. The position requires close interaction with MEP and GPB.


DUTIES: Required -- Develop new analysis methods for metagenome data in the context of integrated metagome and isolate microbial genome data. Work closely with other members of the BDMTC to ensure that the methods are incorporated in the metagenome data management systems at JGI and LBNL. Contribute to the development of visualization tools. Evaluate and communicate results through written research reports for publication and presentations at seminars. Participate in group meetings and seminars. Assist with developing grant proposals for new research directions.

REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS: Required -- Ph.D. degree in computer science, computational biology, mathematics or related filed. Demonstrated ability to develop novel bioinformatic analysis methods. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and organize results for publication and presentation documented by publication record. Significant research and industry experience in biological data management and bioinformatics. Broad understanding of data management and bioinformatics problems. Background understanding in DNA sequence analysis and metabolic reconstruction. Proven record of accomplishment in the context of biological data management and bioinformatics projects in academic and industry settings is essential. Excellent written communication skills along with strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to accurately and effectively represent and promote scientific projects to audiences of diverse technical backgrounds.
