Fleet Mechanic Assistant - Transportation

Under the supervision of the Transportation Manager, the Fleet Mechanic Assistant works with the Fleet Mechanic to perform daily preventive maintenance and repair of Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) fleet vehicles. A significant component of this position is to assist the Fleet Mechanic in general vehicle preventive maintenance with PCA fleet vehicles

Assist the Fleet Mechanic with maintaining an efficient and well running fleet. Responsible for providing the Fleet Mechanic with assistance in general preventive maintenance and repair of the PCA Meal Distribution Center (MDC) meal delivery vehicles, as well as the PCA downtown fleet.

Ensure that all MDC vehicles are routinely and properly inspected in compliance with the “Vehicle Pre-Trip Inspection form”. This includes assisting the MDC drivers with performing pre and/or post trip inspections on a daily basis. Inspections include but are not limited to, checking the oil, checking all fluid levels, checking warning signals and lights, checking tires and fuel levels, checking for damage including scratches and dents, as well as other preventative maintenance functions.

Assist the fleet mechanic with basic preventive maintenance functions such as oil changes, topping off fluids, battery change outs, wiper blade replacements, etc.

Assist the Fleet Mechanic in maintaining and counting all inventory and parts in stock. This information will be compiled and submitted in writing to the Transportation Unit Administrative Assistant, to be entered into the fleet software system. Will also assist with keeping the inventory organized and secure.

Assist the Fleet Mechanic with all aspects of tire changes, including receiving and stocking tires, repairing leaks, mounting and rotating tires.

Assist the Transportation Manager with the PCA fleet by maintaining a car wash and car detail schedule for all vehicles in the downtown fleet, (and/or MDC fleet as needed).

Assist the Fleet Mechanic by helping with vehicle breakdowns and road service calls as needed, as well as dropping off/picking up vehicles that require recall or off-site repairs.

Assist the Fleet Mechanic with keeping the shop in a clean and organized manner. This includes power washing the floor, keeping miscellaneous items in there proper place, and maintaining tools and items locked and secure.

Responsible for attendance at meetings, as required.

Other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Manager.
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High School Diploma or GED
General knowledge of basic automotive repair.

Experience

Candidate must have three to five years experience in general automotive repair and preventive maintenance. This includes brake changes, oil and fluid changes, charging and changing batteries, changing and rotating tires, etc.

Personal Characteristics

Must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license, and have had no traffic violations or accidents for three years prior to employment date.

Must pass a behind-the-wheel driver observation and test conducted by PCA’s driver training instructor.

Must complete the PCA approved defensive driving training program.

Must pass a physical exam, drug and alcohol screening, and criminal background check.

Must have good communication skills, both oral and written.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Keep the Transportation Manager and Fleet Mechanic informed of any issues regarding the PCA fleet.

Keep records of all work and/or inspections performed on the PCA fleet.
