Systems Administrator (Programmer/Analyst III)

Location: West Los AngelesUnder the direction of the Manager of the Campus Systems Group, function as Systems Administrator, providing operational support to unit and campus-wide network and information services including Bruin OnLine. In cooperation with other system administrators, as a member of a collaborative team, administer primarily Linux and Solaris servers including RAID arrays.
Support campus-wide email and web services including SMTP and POP/IMAP. Install and maintain operating systems and application software; monitor systems availability and performance; monitor systems usage; advise on upgrades and enhancements; identify, isolate, and correct system failures; perform preventative maintenance on systems to support 7/24 operations; produce system operations reports; respond to support requests; participate in departmental and campus-wide projects. Work occasional weekends and evenings; participate in rotating 7/24 on-call assignments; work flexible shifts as needed to support 7AM - 7PM onsite coverage; must be able to move 50 pounds of equipment.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualified candidates must show detailed knowledge of UNIX-based operating systems, particularly Linux and Solaris.
Working knowledge of Windows operating systems.
Ability to support enterprise-level hardware and RAID arrays.
Skill performing system testing, fault isolation, problem identification and resolution, and performance analysis.
Detailed knowledge of system log reports, including the ability to analyze and determine system problems.
Skill in systems analysis, establishing benchmarks, monitoring statistics, identifying problems, recommending solutions, and adjusting system configuration settings related to disk, memory, network, and CPU utilization.
Detailed knowledge of scheduled preventative maintenance and test procedures in UNIX Operating System environments.
Detailed knowledge of TCP/IP and Ethernet networking.
Skill and experience supporting internet-based services for end-users in a production environment.
Ability to support customers in a technical environment, responding to end-user requests.
Skill in supporting UNIX-based services such as POP, IMAP, SMTP, DNS, DHCP, HTTP.
Knowledge of and ability to perform system backups; develop and maintain disaster recovery plans; manage storage media. Skill in writing effective computer programs using C/C++ and Perl languages.
Skill in writing effective UNIX shell scripts.
Ability to use versioning systems such as CVS or Subversion.
Ability to install and support enterprise help desk applications such as Remedy or Magic.
Knowledge of relational database management systems such as Oracle.
Ability to install and support system monitoring software such as Nagios or HP OpenView.
Skill in writing valid HTML documents.
Working knowledge and skill in the use of various software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Mozilla.
Skill in effectively prioritizing tasks, and accurately assessing criticality, when faced with competing service requests and/or system faults.
