PROBATION CLERK - FEDERAL PROBATION

INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Probation Office performs two functions for the U.S. District Court. Probation officers provide detailed background information regarding convicted offenders to assist judges in making informed sentencing decisions. Officers also supervise and monitor offenders in the community who are under federal supervision.OCCUPATIONAL INFORMATION
The incumbent prepares and processes a variety of documents essential to probation investigation and supervision and copies file materials and prepares packets for court. The incumbent organizes and prepares new case files for officers, enters case file and statistical data into automated databases, retrieves and transfers case files to other districts, and organizes, purges and closes terminated files. Other duties include answering, screening and routing telephone calls; receiving and directing clients and visitors, answering their questions and providing forms; and providing assistance to other agencies according to the district policies and procedures. Other typical duties include picking up and processing mail.The person selected for this position will have contact with confidential material which is protected under confidentiality regulations. Disclosure of any confidential information to the outside public is prohibited.
REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The successful applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent and must have two years of general experience. For placement at salary levels above $28,128 at least one year of specialized experience is also required. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the possession of, or the ability to acquire, the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is progressively responsible clerical experience requiring the regular and recurring application of clerical procedures involving the routine use of keyboard skills, the use of specialized terminology and demonstrated ability to apply a body of rules, regulations, directives or laws. Such experience is commonly encountered in law firms, legal counsel offices, banking and credit firms, educational institutions, social service organizations, insurance companies, real estate and title offices, and corporate headquarters or personnel/payroll operations. Education above the high school level may be substituted for required general experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference may be given to applicants with clerical or administrative experience in the criminal justice system or a related social service agency.SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants will be screened for the minimum and preferred qualifications and the best qualified applicants may be tested for basic clerical skills. Applicants who successfully perform these skills may be invited for a personal interview. Participation in the interview process will be at the applicant's own expense and relocation expenses will not be provided.
Judiciary employees serve under excepted appointments and are considered at will employees. The initial appointment to this position is provisional pending the successful completion of the required background checks or investigations. U.S. Probation is a drug-free work place and the applicant selected will also be required to participate in a drug screening test prior to employment.U.S. Probation reserves the right to amend or withdraw any announcement without written notice to applicants.
